ROCKER SIDE. BEARING.
Specili'cation of Letters Patent.v
Patented nec. 183.1917.,
Application filed July 14, 1916. Serial No. 109,235. l
Tolall'wlt'om it may concern:
Be it known thatI", CALVIN Bf. Piemon, a citizen of the United States, residing at- Glenellyn, in the county of Dupage and State of Illinois, have invented a` certain new and useful Improvement' in Rocker Side Bearings, of which thefollowing is a full, clear, concise, and exact description,
reference being had to the accompanying;
drawings, forming a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in rocker side bearings.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and relatively cheap rocker side bearing for railway cars, having novel spring means for returning the rocker to normal position after each actuation.
In the drawing forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is an end elevation of portions of a truck and body bolster of a car, showing mv improvements in connection therewith. Fig. 2 is an enlarged, lon gitudinal section of the side bearing proper and taken substantially on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a transverse, vertical sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of F ig. 2. And Fig. 4 is a horizontal, sectional view taken on a plane passing through the axis of oscillation of the rocker and showing a different embodiment of my invention.
Referring now to Figs. 1. 2 and 3, 10 denotes a car body bolster and 11 a truck bolster pivotallv connected thereto in the usual manner. The body bolster 10 is provided on its under-face with a striking plate 12 and the truck bolster has secured thereto on its upper face, the improved rocker bearing designated generally by the reference A.
The bearing A, as shown, comprises a base plate or casting 13 having extended bottom flanges 14--14 by which it is riveted or otherwise secured to the bolster. The base casting 13 is also provided with spaced side walls 15-15 and a central raised section 16 having a curved bearing 17 formed in its upper face to receive the cylindrical lower end 18 of the rocker 19. the latter having an enlarged cylindrical bearing surface 20 adapted to coperate with the striking plate 12. The rocker 19 is provided with a transversely extending perforation 21, being in alinement with corresponding perforations or openings 22-22 in the side walls of the base casting when the rocker is in position.
Extending through thev portion'18 of the' rocker and at right angles kto the axis Lof oscillation `of the rocker isa fixed piny .or rivet 23,located at the center ofthe recess 21. Secured at their inner' ends to the pin 'are' springs 24'-24the' latter. having their outer ends extended into the recesses' 22-22 and securedvto cotters 25-25. The
When the rocker is operated so as to swing to one side or the other of normal position, it is apparent that the springs 24-24 will be twisted, one in the direction of the twist of the coil and the other in the opposite direction. Consequently, when pressure on the rocker is removed, the stored energy due to the twisting of the coils will automatically operate to return the rocker to normal position. It is apparent that both the rocker and the base member may be made in the form of castings and'hence. cheaply manufactured, without the necessity for machining of the parts. Furthermore, changes or repairs may be easily made since the parts are readily accessible.
In the construction illustrated in Fig. 4, the base member or casting 113 is provided with side walls 115 and 116, the former having an integral boss 117 slotted to receive the end of a leaf spring 124 which is held in position by means of a Cotter 125. The rocker has the lower cylinder section thereof provided with a recess 121 which is flared toward the side wall 115 and within which is received the inner end of the leaf spring 124 and upon-release of the pressure on the rocker, the stored up energy in the twisted spring will automatically return the rocker to central position.
I claim:
1. In a side bearing, the combination with a base casting, of a rocker mounted thereon, and a spring for returning the rocker to normal, 'said spring extending parallel to the axis of the rocker from the interior thereof to the base casting and being nonrotatably secured at its ends to both.
2. In a side bearing. the combination with a base casting, of a rocker mounted thereon and having an opening in alinement with its axis of oscillation. and a spring member extending from the base casting to the interior of said opening and adapted to automatically'return the rocker to normal position after actuation. o
3. In a side bearing, the combination 'with a base casting, of a rocker mounted thereon Y and having an opening in alinement with its axis .of oscillation, and a spring member extending from the base casting to the interior of said opening and adapted toau't'o# matically return the rocker. to normal position after actuation, said spring being non# rotatably secured at its ends to the rocker and the base casting.V
v 4. In a side bearing7 the combination with a base casting having upstanding spaced Side Walls with a bearing therebetween, of arocker having a cylindrical lower portion coperating with said bearing, the rocker Copies of this patent may be obtained for having an opening extending therethrough in alinement with the axis of said cylindrical portion, the said side Walls being' also provided with openings in alinement with the opening in the rocker, and springs connected at their centers to the rocker Within said opening therein, said springs being extended at their ends into said openings inthe side Wall and non-rotatably secured to the side Walls.
In Witness that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto subscribed my name this 12th day-of July 1916.
