To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that SUMNER Ar BEMIs, deceased, late a citizen of the United Statesof America, and resident of Springfield, in: thecounty of Hampden and State of Massachw setts, did invent certain new and useful Fmprovements in Trolleys,- of which the fol-- lowingv is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to trolleys for electric railway cars and pertains to" improvements in the trolley wheel ,.the manner of its mounting and lubrication in the head,- and to improvements in the form of head comprising a fixed aw having. an axle stud and i ihingedl law has a transverse inwardly flarmg hole-g through its upper portion;

The fixed jaw is formed integrally with and upwardly extended from the shank C of the head which comprises opposite side walls a a which. are arranged rightangularly to the general: plane of the fixed jaw. The said movable jaw has a hole through its upper portion: transversely of the free end of the axle stud, and to aline with a: hole j in such extremity so that when .the' parts a-re'in their closed and interlocked irelations they may be additionally confined by the'cotter pin 70.
The fixed jaw A has a lug m at its inner axle stud: is passed; and F represents a bushing. sleeve-which has recesses n' a in its oppo- ;siteends whereby one endthereof may be ;in engagement with thesaid lug m so that :the sleeve willbe'prevented from turning on the axis stud, or whereby it the bushing is iendtvise reversed it may be by its opposite recessed end in: the rotation presenting en- Egagement w1t-h the said lug; and by having therrecesses duplicated and in opposition at :each' end of the bushing, provision is made for changing. the relative position of the latter a halt a: rotation,allto the end of providing changes of position for the bushing hole through the trolley wheel for the de- Ilivery of lubricant onto the central portion Iof the bushing F, which, as represented in Figs. 1 and3, is grooved at its intermediate portion, as indicated by the letter 8.
Each jaw at its lower or shank portion and at its inner side is made with an integrally formed boss t against the inner end or face of which is placed the end portion of a fiat spring plate a, such extremity being secured by a rivet a Said spring plate extends upwardly from its rivet connected extremity, is bent around toward the face of the jaw and downwardly returned in its other end portion which constitutes a spring tongue a and which latter has a reaction toward the inner face of the jaw.
It is to be noted that the jaw adjacent the return bent portion of the said spring plate is made with an integrally formed guide 111g 4), and for the accommodation of such lug the spring plate at its upper return bent portion is provided with an aperture w so that the spring will not, in any manner, by the lug, be interfered with for its spring reaction toward the inner side of the jaw.
The contact spring provided at each side of the jaw in the usual situation relatively to the axis and hub end of the trolley wheel has its lower portion made of a forked shape; and the spring, while reliably retained in its place in the trolley head when forced down between the spring tongue 1& to the inner face of the jaw and as guided and centered by the lug 1 may be most easily withdrawn from its place in the head, without the requirement of removing any rivets, screws or like fastenings for the quick replacement thereof.
What is claimed is l. A trolley head comprising at one side an integrally formed upwardly extending fixed jaw, provided with an axle stud rigidly supported and transversely horizontally extended therefrom, said axle stud having a small perforation transversely through itnear its free end, and said jaw having at its shank portion opposite side walls which are arranged right angular-1y to the general plane of said fixed jaw, and a movable jaw having at its lower portion opposite ear lugs which are matched facewise relatively to the aforesaid opposite side walls of the shank, a pivot stud extending through said opposite ear lugs and the shank walls adjacent thereto, one of said ear lugs being extended inwardly beyond said pivot stud and having a perforation t-herethrough, matching with which is a perforation which is provided in the adjacent side wall of the shank, a pin for detachably looking through said perforations,and the said movable jaw having a hole transversely through its upper portion for engagement with the free Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,
end of the axle stud, having another, and smaller, hole intersecting the first named one and for matching with the comparatively small hole which is provided in the extremity of the axle stud.
2. A trolley head and a contact spring therefor, the head comprising opposite upstanding jaws and having a wheel supporting axle mounted in the upper portion thereof, the shank portions of the said jaws having at the inner walls thereofeach a spring formed of thin flat metal bent into loop form, the lower extremity thereof being secured to the wall and extending upwardly from its secured portion in spaced relation to the wall while a return bent and downwardly extended portion of the spring plate which has its location inside of the aforesaid secured lower extremity, and terminates above the securing point, is adapted for a spring reaction toward the face of the wall, and acts to impart a yielding retaining force against the shank of the contact spring which is readily insertible between the aforenamed return bent and downwardly extended spring portion and the said wall.
3. A trolley head having at the lower portion of its aw an inwardly extending guide lug, and a flat spring plate by its extremity secured to the inner side of the jaw below said lug, the same being upwardly extended from its secured portion inwardly return bent to constitute a downwardly returning spring tongue adapted for a reaction against the inner face of the jaw and having a recess in its upper portion for the accommodation of the said guide lug therein.

lug, a fiat spring plate by its extremity secured to the inner side of the jaw below said lug, the same being upwardly extended. from its secured portion, bent around toward the face of the jaw and downwardly returned, and having at its upper return bent portion a recess for the entrance thereinto of said guide lug, and a contact spring the lower end of which is forked and adapted upon having a guiding engagement with said lug between the wall of the jaw and the said spring tongue to be tensioned and reliably held in place by the latter.
