Description

A. R. SELDEN.
TONGS.
A'PPLICATION FILED MAR. 3, 1917.

l ings, 1 and 2 i To all whom t mayy concern:
L UNITED, STATES PATENTOFFIGE Be itv known that I, ARTHR R. SEnDEiv, aA citizen of the United States, and resident of Rochester, in the county of..Monroe: and
State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tongs, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to tongs, and an object thereof is to provide a construction which will enable the tongs to be made into ornamental form from sheet metal. Another object of the invention is to provide tongs in which a small movement of the operating handles or levers will make a maximum movement of the jaws of the tongs. Still another object of the invention is to provide a construction in which the handles of the tongs will have their forward ends so arranged as to act as a stop for holding the material away from the pivot of the jaws.
To these and other ends, the invention consists of certain parts and combinations of parts all of which will be hereinafter described, the novel features being pointed out in the appended claims. Y
In the drawings Figure 1 is a view, in side elevation, of tongs constructed in accordance with this invention, showing the tongs in open position;
Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. the tongs in closed position;
ig. 3 is a view of one jaw of the tongs;
Fig. 4 is an enlarged section on the line 4 4, Fig. 1;
Fig. 5 is an enlarged section on the line 5 5, Fig.V 1; and
Fig. 6 is a view of the handle end of the tongs, partlj7 in section.
eferring more particularly to the drawindicate the jaws of the tongs. hese jaws are preferably formed from sheet metal and stamped into cup form. Each jaw is preferably provided with a pair of ears 3 and 4 which are connected to the ears of the other jaw by a pivot pin 5, the ear 4 beingV defiected at 6 so that the distance between the ears is the same on the two jaws, and at the same time the jaws are permitted to operate in the same plane.
For operating the jaws 1 and 2, hand levers 7 and 8 are provided, preferably also bent from sheet metal into channel form, and having their forward ends provided with ears 9 and 10, the ears 9 being deflected at 1l So that the distance between the two 1, showing monos. f

earson the twok levers isftheisame, thus permitting, the,l leversto. operate inr-the same plane about a common pivot pin 12. The hand levers k8 are projected between the ears 60 3 and '4 of the jaws l and 2, so that the pivot l2 of the hand levers 7 and 8 lies in advance of the pivot 5 of the jaws 1 and 2. Each hand lever is pivoted to one of the jaws, the
hand lever 7 being pivoted to the jaw 1 at 65 j 13, and the hand lever 8 being pivoted to the jaw 2 at 14, these pivots being situated between the pivots 5 and 12. By this arrangement a small movement in the levers 7 and 8 communicates a larger movement to 70 the jaws 1 and 2, thus permitting the jaws to be open to a maximum distance. To the end of forming large grasp surfaces of the levers 7 and 8, each of said levers is enlarged at 18 and also curved, the extreme end 75 of the enlarged portion being bent inwardly at 19 to form a stop for coperating with a like portion on the other lever, limiting the closed movement of the levers. A latch 20 may be pivoted at 21 to one of the hand 80 levers and have a double nose 22, which may engage with either side of a headed projection 23 on the other hand lever.
With a view of maintaining the jaws nort mally open, a spring is employed, preferably coiled at 15 about the pivot pin 5, and having arms 16 extending rearwardly and engaing within the channels of the levers 7 an 8.
Tongs constructed in accordance with this invention permit the formation of an ornamental construction from sheet metal. The parts are so formed as to give durability in use, while at the same time a construction is secured in which the jaws have a maximum opening movement for a minimum movement of the operating levers without the employment of a complicated lever action. The forward ends of the hand levers 7 and 8 act as a stop to prevent any articles becom- 100 ing lodged between the jaws at their pivots.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. Tongs comprising aV pair of pivotally connected jaws, and handle levers pivoted on a common pivot at their forward ends and pivoted to the jaws between the common handle pivot and the jaw pivot, the common handle pivot being nearer the outer ends of the jaws than the common jaw pivot. c
Tongs comprising a pair of jaws pivoted on a common axis, handle levers pivoted Q l l 1,250,365
