Description
R. .1. ALGER.
Metallic Layer Loop for Harness.
No. 124,996, r PatentedMarch 26,1872.
PATENT O FICE.
RICHARD J. ALGEO, OF KALAMAZOO, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN METALLIC LAYER-LOOPS FOR HARNESS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 124,996, dated March 26, 1872.
To whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Brennan J. ALGEO, of Kalamazoo, in the county of Kalamazoo and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Metallic Layer-Loops for Harness; and I do declare that the following is a true and accurate description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawin g and to the letters of reference marked thereon and being a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my device. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the same as in use in a breast-collar. Fig. 3 isa modification thereof, more especially designed for attaching the hip-tug to a very heavy breechin g, as shown in Fig. 4..
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
The nature of this invention relates to a metallic loop for attaching the straps of a harness to such parts as are made up of a fold and layer such as the breast-collar and breechin gwhereby such connection is rendered much stronger than as heretofore made, and in such a manner that there will be no enlargement of the harness at the place of insertion of the loop.
The invention consists in a peculiar loop, the construction and method of using which I shall now proceed to describe.
In the drawing, A represents, in Fig. 1, a
rectangular frame, of light and thin metal, with a bridge-piece, d, across the center to give the frame the necessary strength to resist a strain, which might otherwise pull apart the long sides of the frame, which, with the end sides, are beveled toward the outer edge on the outer face. The frame is cast with an outwardly-curved loop, b, at the upper side, its bar being of sufficient length to receive the end of a strap, to which it is sewed. The frame is purposely made longer than its loop, for reasons which will be presently explained.
In the rectangular spaces included in the frame I place aleather filling, c, as thick as the frame itself, when it is readyfor insertion between the layer B aud fold U of the breast-collar or breechin g, and is then sewn in place, the stitches passing through layer, filling, and fold.
It will readily be seen that the stitching cannot be cut by the lower bar of the frame, the
strain of which is taken up by the filling, while the greater length of seam included in the frame renders the fasteningmuch stronger than where a ring or an open frame (generally a buckle with its tongue removed) is employed; but one of the most important results attained is the smoothness of the job, especially on the inner side of the layer, where there is no projection to chafe the horse.
In making very heavy breeching, the hiptug D, Fig. 4,-cannot, on account of its stiffness, be bent much. In this case I make the frame with an oblique orinclined loop, as shown; which may be sold in pairs,-the loops slanting in opposite directions.
. What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The frame A, provided with a loop, 1), bridgepiece at, and filling c, substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and set forth.
RICHARD J. ALGEO.
