Specification of Letters Itatent.
Patented ec. 11, 191i.
Application filed heceniber 16, 1915. Elerial No. 6?,102.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, WILLIAM S. Pnonn ma, l VILLIAM H. Enwsnns, and ALEXANDER 1F. WINTnns, all citizens of the United Sta tes, residing at Grand Rapids, in the countyof Kent and State 0t Michigan, have invent ed new and useful improvements in Loose- Leaf Binders, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to loose-leaf binders; and its object is generally, to provide such a binder which shall be simple and economical in construction; and more particularly, such a binder having simple and readily-operable adjusting means.
These objects are attained by, and the invention finds preferable embodiment in, the structure hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a plan view of the inside of a loose-lent binder opened out fiat:
2 is a fragmentary view in perspective of the same:
Fig. 3 is a sectional view of certain parts on line 3-3 oat Fig. 1:
Fig, 4- is a like view of certain parts on line llof Fig. 1, and
Fig. 5 is a like view of the roughened sur- :lace 0t one cover, adapting it to secure the leat-holding member against sliding or slackening movement.
in the embodiment of the invention chosen for illustration by the drawings and lor detailed description herein, the covers 1 and Q are connected by a flexible back 8. Flexible leaf-holding members ii: are secured to one cover 1, as by being riveted between. anehor plates 5 to said cover. These leaf holding members extend through suitable slots or orifices of common form (not shown) in the binding edges of the leaves 6,
and are slidable on the other cover 2 to adjust the covers to different thicknesses of their contents. Each 0t" these leaf-holding members is thus slidably guided at its edges in a suitable guide 7 on cover 2, and passes under an arm 8 pivoted at 9 on said cover and adapted to be swung in a direction parallel to the side or inner face of said cover and under a keeper 10 positioned at that side oi said member opposite to the pivot 9. When swung into this position, the arm presses said member down against the cover and clamps or holds it in the adjusted post tion to which it has been drawn. When the arm is swung to its other position (shown in Fig. 2) the said member is released and may be readjusted as desired. The arm is secured against accidental disengagement from its keeper by their suitable mutually- engaging portions 11 and 1% respectively, particularly shown in Fig. 3. The arm, being preferably of spring material, is readily sprung to disengage the said portions 11 and 12, and being released from the keeper, springs away from the leafholding member and cover 2, thus permitting the ready adjustment oi said member? and owing to such spring character and to the positioning of the keeper and the arms pivot on the opposite sides of the leaf-holding member, the arm in its holding position spring-presses said member between it and said cover.
A stop 13 on cover 2, limits the arm in its releasing movement from swinging beyond the position of the leaf-holding member as the same is confined edgewise in the guide: thus, said member guided and held against edgewise movement by the guide 7 and by the swinging arm against such fiatwise movement as would take it out ofsaid guide.
Cover 2 has a roughened surface 14 immediately under the leafiholding member, which is adapted to more securely hold, in the arms operative or holding position, said member against sliding movement: and such roughened surface is preferably formed as shown in Fig. 5, wherein the projections or teeth slope toward the binding edge of the cover and are abrupt toward its opposite edge, thus more securely holding said member against that movement which loosens or slackens it.
The invention being intended to be defined solely by the claims, is not to be limited by details of construction shown or described.
hat is claimed is:
1. ln a loose-leaf binder; a pair of covers, the second of which has a guide for the edges of the leaf-holding member hereinafter named; a flexible leafiholding member secured to the first cover; and an arm pivotally mounted on, and adapted to be swung in a direction parallel with the side of, the second cover, to one position in which it holds against movement said member beleases said member;
tween the arm and second cover and to another position in which said member is released; the second cover having a stop adapted to limit the arm in its said releasing movement from swinging beyond the position of said member as guided in said guide.
2. In a loose-leaf binder; a pair of covers, the second of which has va keeper and also a guide for the edges of the leaf-holding member hereinafter named; a flexible leaf-holding member secured to the first cover; and an arm pivotally mounted on and adapted to be swungin a direction parallel with the side of, the second cover, to one position in which it engages the keeper and clamps said member between the arm and second cover and to another position in which it is released from the keeper and rethe second cover having a stop. adapted to limit the arm in its said releasing movement from swinging beyond the position of said member as guided in said guide.
3. In a loose-leaf binder; a pair of covers, the second of Which has a keeper; a flexible leaf-holding member secured to the first cover and an arm pivotally mounted on, and adapted to be swung in a direction parallel with the side of, the second cover to one position in which it engages the keeper and clamps said member between the arm and second cover and to another position in which it is released from the keeper and releases said member; the keeper being positioned on the second cover on the opposite side of said member from the pivotal mounting of the arm; the keeper and arm having respectively mutually-engaging portions Copies ofthis patent may be obtained for five cents each,

adapted to hold the arm against accidental disengagement from the keeper.
4. In a loose-leaf binder; a pair o'l covers; a flexible leaf-holding men'iber secured to the first cover; and an arm oi spring material and pivotally mounted on, and adapted to be swung in a direction parallel with the side of, the second cover, to one position in which it holds against movement said member between the arm and second cover and to another position in which said member is released; the second cover ha ring a roughened portion under said member and adapted to secure it in the arms holding position of said member against sliding morenn nl.
5. In a loosc-leaii' binder; a pair oi? covers: a flexible leaf-holding member serurcd to the first cover; and an arm oi spring material and pivotally mounted on, and adapted to be swung in a direction parallel with the side of, the second cover. to one position in which it holds against movement said member between the arm and second corer and to another position in which said member is released; the second cover having); a roughenral portion under said member and adapted to secure it in the arms holding position of said member against sliding movement in that direction which slackens oil said member.
In testimony whereof we have hereunto set our hands in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
