Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Dec, 11, 191?.
ames filed. March 12,1917. Serial no. 154,280.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, HARVEY B. HALL, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Champaign, in the county of Champaign and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rail-Fasteners; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make .and
use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in rail fasteners and more particularly to that class of fasteners adapted for use on metallic or composition ties.
One object of the invention is to provide a fastener which will be readily applied to use without resorting to the use of spikes which are soon loosened by the vibration caused by the rolling stock.
Another object of the invention is to provide a fastener which will not only securely hold the rail on the tie but will also serve as a brace therefor.
With these and numerous other objects in view, my invention resides in the novel features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the parts as will be hereinafter more fully set forth tion and claims.
In the accompanying drawings 2- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the fastener applied to a tie and rail;
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the fastener applied to a tie and rail.
Fig. 8 is a vertical sectional view on the plane of line 33 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is a perspective View of the fastener.
Numerals of reference are employed to indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
Reference is now had to the drawings in which the numeral 2 designates a tie upon which a rail 1 rests. lhis fastener being especially adapted for use on metallic or concrete ties 1 have'illustrated in the drawings a tie 2 comprising a metallic shell 3 which is filled with concrete 4 and reinforced in any desired manner, said tie having transverse apertures or openings therethrough for a purpose to be hereinafter set forth.
The rail fastener comprises a horizontally disposed flat metal plate'ti preferably elongated as shown in the drawings, said plate being of a length slightly greater than the in the specifica- 7 width of the base flange of the rail 1, the purpose of which will be hereinafter described. The plate 6 has one end inclined and a laterally extending inclined flange Twhich may be bent from the said end of the plate 6. ormolded integrally therewith; said flange being provided on its upper end with anupwardly and inwardly inclined extension 8 which isadapted to take over the adjacent portion of the base flange of the rail thereby prelventing relative movement of the tie and rai For the purpose of securing the fastener to the tie, the plate is provided with an aperture 9 at one end adapted to aline with the transverse opening in the tie, said alined openings receiving therethrough a bolt 10 which is held in place by a nut 11.
When the fastener is applied to a tie as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 in which views two are shown on one tie, the portion of the plate 6 which is apertured extends beyond the edge of the base flange so that the bolts 10 after passing through the tie will be positioned adjacent the flanged end of the other fastener.
It will be readily seen that in use two fasteners may be applied to each tie, as shown in the drawings or one fastener may be applied to each tie, said fasteners being of course secured to the same sides of every other tie and to the opposite sides of the ties between.
From the foregoing description of the construction and operation of my improved rail fastener, the manner of applying the same to use and the operation thereof will be readily understood and it will be seen that I have provided a simple and efficient means for carrying out the object of the invention.
I claim l. A device of the class described comprising a flat plate contacting one side of a tie and disposed beneath the base flange of a rail, a substantially vertically disposed laterally extending flange on one end of said plate, an upwardly inclined extension on the upper end of the lateral flange to take over the base flange of the rail, and means for fastening the plate to the tie.
2. A device of the class described comprising a flat plate contacting one side of a tie and disposed beneath-the base flange of a rail, a substantially vertically disposed laterally bent flange on one end of said plate,
an upwardly inclined extension bent from cases (if tlif paiteht' as? be attained" far fiv ee'n't's eaeh, by addressing the the upper end of the lateral flange to take over the base flange of the rail and meansfor fastening the plate to the tie.
3.'The combination With a rail and a! tie; of a fiat plate contacting one side of the tie and, disposed beneath the rail, asubstan tially vertically disposed laterally extending flange on one end of said plate, an upwardly inc-lined extension on the upper end 01? the lateral flangesaid extension: being adapted to take over the basefiange of the rail at a point beyond the adjacent side face of the tie, said plate having in its other end an aperture to ree ive a fastening lement passed throng the fie t6 seeure said tie and fastener tegether,
4. A rail fastener comprising a flat plate, a substantially vertically disposed lateral flange bent from one end of said plate, an upwardly inwardly inclined extension bent from the upper end of said lateral flange, and said plate having a transverse aperture adjacent its other end to receive a fastening element.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
HARVEY B. HALL.
