Be it known that I, ANTOINE T. BOUSQUET, a citizen of the United States, residing at Worcester, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Roll-Paper Starter, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a device to be used in connection with a cutter bar for cutting or tearing sheets of paper from a` roll, particularly of that type used in stores and markets for wrapping paper.

The principal objects of this invention are to provide a simplified form of starter which will be held yieldingly against the roll in such a way that no matter whether the roll is small or large it will effectively start the edge of the paper so that it can be reached by the fingers and torn olf. l am aware of the fact that several have been invented for the same general purpose, but this invention is designed to secure more etlicient results in a more simple way and especially to provide an arrangement which will necessarily al ways work. v

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, in whichg Figure 1 is a front elevation of an ordinary type of paper cutter with a preferred form of this invention applied thereto; and

Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the same showing how the paper is started by it.

The drawings show the invention applied to a cutter which is of ordinary character and is mounted en a frame 1() by means of pivotal supports 11. These pivotal supports are provided with springs 13 coiled on them and having their ends attached in the usual way to press the cutter bar against the roll yieldingly and keen it there as the roll decreases in size. The cutter bar 111 is of spring steel and extends beyond the end of the roll.

This inner end is provided with a wedge shaped toe 17 which projects upwardly and as it presses closely against the roll it necessarily always separates the end of the web as shown in Fig. 2' and thus performs its function effectually.

Tt is to be noted that this starter is held freely on the cutter bar when there is no roll of paper in position, but that it is pressed against it both by the springs 13 and the spring provided by the end of the cutter bar itself. In this way the separating toe is always kept in the proper position to perform its work. i

Although T have illustrated and described only a single Vform of the invention T am aware of the fact that modifications can be made therein by any person skilled in the art without departing from the scope of the invention as expressed in the claims. Therefore l do not wish to be limited to all the details of construction herein shown and described, but what I do claim is 1. ln a paper serving apparatus, the combinati on with the frame rotatably support ing` the roll of paper, of a resilient cutter` bar, a support for saidbar pivoted on said frame and having arms carrying the bar, a paper-edge starter pivotally mounted on one arm of said support, one end of said bar pressing said starter against the cylindrical surface of the roll, and a toe on said starter adapted to underlie the out edge of the paper.
