i `Be it known that we, WILLIAM TI. Stinn- MAN and JOHN F. MCGINMTEY, citizens of the .United States, residing at St. J`,oseph in the county` of Buchanan land State of Missouri, have invented certainlnew and useful Improvements in Barrel-Heads,l of; which the following is a specification. y y y The invention relates to barrel heads, and more particularly to the class offself-locking barrel heads. l 4
The primary object ofthe invention is the provision ofV a .head of this character wherein the end of the barrel receivingthe head is materially reinforced. andsaid barrel can be ,opened by the removal of the head, thereby increasing the life of thebarrel for use. -Y
Another objectof the invention is the provision o-f a head of this character wherein access can be had to the interior of the barrel with despatch without damage to the barrel or the head, thereby rendering the barrel. practically indestructible and in event that the barrel becomes unfit for use the head can be removed and placed within a new barrel, so that both the barrel and the headwill have maximum wearing quality and also will minimize labor in the opening or closing of the barrel when the same is used for the shipment of contentsl from one point to another. A further object of the invention is the provision of a head of this character wherein the destruction of the-barrel after once being used is eliminated and `at the same time avoids any repairing of the barrel while in constant use,\the head being practically indestructible and can be fitted within old or new barrels in a convenient manner.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a head of this character which is extremely simple in construction, readily adaptable to and removed from a barrel, strong, durable and inevpensiveV inV manufacture and installation.
Other objects will be in part obvious and in part hereinafter set forth.
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combination of elements and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter described, and the scope `of the application of which will `be indicated in the appended claim. In the accompanying drawings:

Referring more particularly to the drawing, A designates aportion of an ordinary barrel which is made up of a plurality of barrel stares as usual, `'with the hoops applied, and at each end is formed the inner beveled surface B circumferentially of the body of the barrel, while next to this surface interiorly of the latterV is the groove C `for thD reception of the o-rdinarywooden head, and in lieu thereof is employed `the selflocking head hereinafter fully described.
Theself-locking head comprises an annular rim l0 preferably made from metal and is tapered correspondingly to the beveled surface B interiorly and at the end of the barrel,the rim being formed with an annular flange 11 out-turned therefrom at its outer edge to rest upon the open end edge of the barrel A, while the opposite edge of said rim B is formed with an annular inwardly extending flange 12 which forms a bearing or Vrest shoulder circumferentially of the rim Y of is an external rib 13 which is adapted to engage in the groove C interiorly of the barrel A. so that the rim l0 will be securely fastened in place in the end of said barrel when it is forced or mounted therein so that the rim 10 will constitute a permanent part of the barrel until the same is destructed by reason of excessive use thereof. It will be noted that this rim 10 materially reinforces the end of the barrel to avoid the breaking or crushing of the barrel or the displacement of any of the staves and thereby materially strengthens said barrel at each end thereof to increase the life of the same, as will be apparent.
Removably held within the rim 10 is the head proper which comprises a disk 14 preferably made from metal, although the same may be made from any other suitable material having the required strength and ri gidity and is designed to rest upon the flange V12 for closing the end of the barrel, the disk 14 being formed at intervals with substantially key-,hole shaped slots 15 which are curvilinear in their length in correspondence :with the peripheral edge of the disk 14 and `are slightly spaced therefrom, While perma nently fixed in the flange 14 of the rim 10 at intervals are retaining lugs 16 which are Vformed with heads 17, and these lugs are adapted to engage in the slots 15, the heads beingl passed through the wider or other lends thereof so that the lugs will pass into the narrow portions of the slots and the heads 17 will serve to retain the disk 14 within the rim, it being understood that the head is slightly rotated to permit the removal or the retention thereof froln and in the rim, and when retained therein will close the end of the barrel, as will be obvious.
Mounted on the disk 14 at diametrically opposite points are upstanding finger grips 18 and 19 respectively, the latter being formed with an aperture 20 to receive a sealing wire 21 which is also passed through an eye 22 formed on the heads of one of the lugs 16, and in this manner when the locking seal is used the disk 14 can be secured in closing position and thus eliminate the sur.- reptitious opening of the barrel during transit thereof. The lugs 18 and 19 serve to permit the turning of the disk 14 in the rim for permitting the application of said disk or the removal thereof.

The resilient catch 23 is formed with a finger-hold 26 so that it lcan be manually released to permit vthe construction and -operationof the herein described'barrel'heafd will be readily apparent and, therefore, a more extended eX- planation has been omitted.
Havingthus described our invention, we claim: 'Y y i l In a barrel constructed with the chine and groove for the head, a sel'f'loc'king head `comprising an annular rim made from metal tapered correspondingly to the internal surface of the chine andengagedtherewith and y formed with an "annular flange out-turned therefrom at its outer edge to `overlap Aand rest against the end edge of the barrel,`the rim being also provided with an inwardly extending annular flange forming a .rest shoulder, a rib struck outwardly circumferentially from "the rim intermediate the flanges for engagement in the groove in the chine to secure said rim in place, a vdisk forming a barrel head detachably engaged on the shoulder', and a spring catch carried by the disk and working through the same for the automatic engagement thereof in the shoulder to lock said diskagainst movement thereon.
