LAURENCE C. PERRY, OF MNTPELIER, INDIANA.
CONCRETE FENCE-POST.
Application filed February 21, 1917.
Be it known that I, LAURENCE citizen of the United States, residing Aat Montpelier, in the county` of Blackford, State of indiana, have invented a new and useful Concrete Fence-Post; and I do 'hereby declare the following to be a full,'clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention relates to an improved wire attaching means for use in connection with plastic body fence posts, such as are commonly constructed of concrete and internally reinforced, the object of the invention being to provide a wire attaching means which embodies novel features of construction whereby the fence wires or woven wire fencing can be readily applied to the fence post or removed therefrom.
Further objects of the invention are to provide a device of this character which is comparatively simple and inexpensive in its construction, which can be easily manipulated to secure the fencing in position or release it from engagement with the fence post, and which will hold the fencing securely in position.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel combinations and arrangements of the parts as will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the novel features thereof being pointed out in the appended claims.
For a full understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which Figure l is a front elevation of a reinforced concrete fence post provided with wire attaching means constructed in accord-` ance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is a .side elevation thereof.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged horizontal sectional view on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a view similar toFig. 3, showing a slight modification.
Fig. 5 is a detached perspective View of the modified plate construction shown by Fi 4:.
Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view of a further modification of the plate.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to ir. the following description and indicated Specification of Letters Patent.
C.' PERRY, a
Patented Dec. 4L, 1917.
Serial No. 150,108.
in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral l designates the body portion of a fence post which is formed of some plastic material such astoncrcte, said body portion being preferably7 reinforced in some suitable man# ner as by means of the longitudinally extending reinforcing rod Q. Partially embedded in the Vfront of the plastic body portion l is a vertical series of elongated plates 3, one end of each of the plates projecting outwardly from the post and being apertured at 4, while the opposite end of each plate is embedded in the post and provided in its longitudinal edges with correspond ing notches 5. These notches 5 are preferably substantially triangular in shape, be-
obtain a firm hold upon the plastic material and prevent the plates being pulled through the front of the post. If desired, the inner end of each of the plates 3 may also be formed with a slotted opening 6 to receive the plastic material, thereby obtaining a still further anchorage of the plates in the post. These plates 3 may be arranged at suitable intervals to receive the strands of the woven wire fencing 7 or of any kind of wire fencing which it may be desired to use. It is preferred that two of the plates 3 near the top of the post be put close together in order to provide for mounting an upper strand of barbed wire fencing where this is desired. A locking bar 8 is insertible through all of the apertures 4 in the projecting end of the plates 3, said bar being inserted in position from the top of the post, and being provided at the upper end thereof with a suitable handle or finger piece 9. This locking bar fits over the horizontal strands of the wire fencing so as to confine them in position, and the wire fencing is thus securely fastened to the post, although it can be readily released at any time for withdrawing the locking bar.
A slight modification is shown by Figs. 4 and 5, in which the plates 3a are similar to the plates 8, although the rear ends thereof are bifurcated to provide a pair of resilient arms l0 having hooked ends 11 adapted to snap around the reinforcing rod 2 of the post. The noses of the hooked ends 11 are beveled so that when the plates are inserted in position the resilient arms will be sprung apart and the hooked ends thereof permitted to snap around the reinforcing rod.
F ig. 6 shows a further modification in which the plate 8h is similar to the plate shown by Fig. 3, with the exception that the projecting end thereof is horizontally bifurcated, as indicated at 12. This form of plate would be found very useful where single wires are to be engaged and held in position.
Having thus described the invention, what -I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is p l. A fence post including a. plastic body,
la vertical series of flat horizontally disposed body, and a locking bar slidable through the apertures in the outwardly projecting ends of the plates.
2. A fence post including a plastic body, a longitudinal reinforcing rod extending through the plastic body, a vertical series of longitudinally disposed plates partially Copies of this patent may be obtained Afor embedded in one side of the body, one end of each of the plates projecting outwardly from the body and being formed with an aperture, while the opposite end of the plate is embedded in the plastic body and bifurcated to provide resilient arms having hooked ends, said hooked ends .being formed with beveled noses and being adapted to snap into engagement with the reinforcing rod, and a locking bar slidable through the apertures in the outwardly extending ends yof the plates. f
3. A fence post including a plastic body, a longitudinal reinforcing rod extending through the body, a vertically extending series of flat and horizontally disposed plates partially embedded in one side of the body, one end of each of the plates projecting outwardly fromV the body and being formed with an aperture, while the opposite end of the plate is embedded in the plastic body and formed with a bifurcated end providing resilient hooked arms having beveled noses adapted to snap into engagement with the reinforcing rod, the longitudinal side edges of the plates being notched tointerlock with the plastic material of the post, and a locking bar slidable through the apertures in the outwardly projecting ends of the plates.
In testimony whereof l have signed my naine to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
