APPLICATION HLED um! 30, van.
1 [III/III Patented D60. 4, 1917.
2SHETS-SHEE I 61m x we as JOSEPH G.
HUYE, OF NEW ORLEANS, toursx nia BOX.
Applicationilled June a0, 1917.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEP H Gr. Horn, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to collapsible setup boxes, more particularly to paste-board hat-boxes, candy-boxes and similar receptacles and may be made in any desired form, it being understood of course that the outline of the top and bottom or end port-ions or sections shall correspond to the cross-sectional form of the body.
The primary object of this invention is to improve the locking means for sectional collapsible set-up boxes consisting of two or more sections, two of which may be easily and securely locked together in accordance herewith.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a box, of square form, in which my invention is embodied, the upper and lower portions being partially broken away;
Fig. 2, a top plan view ofthe same, with the -cover removed and part of the walls shown in section and the rest broken away, two of the spreading leaves or looking leaves 3 being in. locking position and two folded in free position;
Fig. 3, a superposed perspective view of portions of the body and the flange or lip 5 carrying the engaging elements;
Fig. 4, afra entary sectionalview on the line 4-4 of ig. 2, the wall of the body being broken away to show the inner face of the lip 5 in elevation;
Fig. 5, a detail superposed perspective view of the parts of the box ready to be packed for shipment, the top and bottom telescoping and receiving between them the body 8 in folded condition;
Fig. 6, a view, similar to Fig. 1, of an octagonal form of box, the .side walls being slightly broken away to show thelpreading leaves 3 in spreadin or locking position in this form orstyle 0 box;
Fig. 7 a view, similar to Fig. 3, of a modified orm; and Fi 8, a fragmentary horizontal lon 'tudina sectional view through such mod ed form.
Referring now in detail to the drawings, the box illustrated consists of three parts or sections, the top A having the usual flange or Specification of Letters Patent.
' except Patented Dec. 4, 1917. Serial No. 177,896.
lip, the body section 8 snugly fitting into this flange 0r lip with its upper portion and with its lower portion similarly fitting into the correspondingly shaped flange or lip 5 of the bottom 4.
Each face or wall of the lip or flange 5, in the angular shapes, such as shown, is, preferably, provided with at least two an gular openings 6 to receive the correspondingly shaped lugs 7 formed by stamping out on three sides the material of body 8 and bending it on its forth connected side back against the adjacent face of body 8 and securing it in such position by any suitable method or means, such as the staple 9. The position of the lugs 7 on the body 8 corresponds to the position of the holes 6 in the lip or flan e 5, so that when the bod 8 is slightly de ormed and has its lower en portion inserted into the iip 5 end 4 its lugs 7- W111 enter the gamrespandmg holes 5 m the lip 5 and th edges f the 7 and the walls of the respective holes 6 will engage and prevent any movement of the parts 4, 5 and 8 with relation to each other, laterally inwardly or outwardly, so long as the body 8 retains its normal shape.
When the parts 8 and 4 have beenassembled as above with the lugs 7 proj ecting into or through the respective openings 6, the spreading or looking leaves 3, formed intefinal with a sheet of paste-board l secured at against the upper face of the bottom 4 by staples 2 or by any other suitable means or method, are turned down on their scored lines 10 so that their edges enga e the adjacent portions of the inner w'a is of the body 8 and force the same outwardl so that the outer face of the body 8 will be lield tightly against the inner wall or walls of lip or flange 5, preventing the escape of lugs from t eir respective holes 6.
When assembled as above the arts can-. not become separate from, or twi d or disto, each other in the face of the body 8 and through their respective holes 6 and formed by stam ing out, on threesides in each instance, fol 'ng back one over the other, to'form an additional thickness, and held in. position by staples 9, or any other suitable means, are substituted for the lugs .7, above described.
Any suitable fibrous or metallic material -ma be used throughout or wherever desired.
Idaving thus described my invent1on,wh at I claim'as newand desire to secure by L t,- ters Patent-is:
1. A receptacle comprising two one of saidportions being rovi ed with p'rojectionsand the other 0 said being formed tosnugly receive sai projecmal s rea condition. I
' 2. receptacle compris ng two sectionstions, in combination with spreadin means for holdin .one of said sectlons in its norprovided with cooperating perforations and projections, in combination with independent spreading means for holding said parts in normal position to prevent the'escape of said projections from sa d perforations.
-,- 1 3. A receptacle comprising a bodv section and acover; section havin'g'a lip provided with holes, the body sectionbeing rovided with projections adapted, in assemb ed posiproject into said holes, in combination, to
w holes respectively.
ortions, I
ortions spreading means-adapted to hold.
one of said sections in its normal spread condition to prevent the escape of such projections from their respective holes.
4. A receptacle havingtwo sections, one of said sections being provided withintegral lugs and the other of said sections being provided with holes to receive said lugs,- in combination with independent spreading means for holding one of'said sections in its non'nalk-position to prevent the disengage ment of said lugs'from the walls of said 5. A receptacle having two sections, one of said se'ctions beingprovided with lugs and-the other being provided with holes to receive said lugs, in combination with means secured to one of said sections to keep the other of said sections in its normahspreadq condition. w
6. A' receptacle having two sectionsone holes to receive said-'lLgs, in combination a with means secured to one-of said sections and adapted to engage the-other section to keep it in pro er form, preventing the disname. to this specification.
.of said sections being provided with integral lugs and the other being provided with 'eng ement o said-lugs from the wa llsfpf {said oles. v.
