Description
J. J. HALATA.
SMOKING DEVICE. APPLWATION FILED JUNE25| I911- 1,29,078. v Patented Dec. 4,1917.
Application fi led J'une 25, 1917. Serial No. 176,767.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known thatI, JOSEPH J. HALATA, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Schulenburg, in the county of Faof Texas, have invented certaln new and useful Improvements in Smoking Devices, of which the following is a specification.
referred to, and
his invention relates to new and useful improvements in the art of smoking meats, etc., and the primary object of the invention is to provide a new and improved smoking device, adapted to be positioned in a smoke-house, and which is provided with means for controlling the amount of smoke that issues from the fire, also absolutely covering the fire and making, the operation of the device absolutely safe.
other object oftheinvention vide a smoking device of this character which includes a fire shield that surrounds the fire, with a perforated removable top to make the device absolutely safe and prevent any likelihood of the smoke house catching'fire, and which is provided with a vertically adjustable cover, so as to control the amount of smoke that issues from the fire, at the will of the operator.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character, which is easily and simply constructed, inexpensive to manufacture, and one which will be very efiicient in operation.
With these and numerous other objects in view, my invention consists of the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts which will be herein more particularly pointed out in the specification and claims.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a vertical section through the device, and 1 Fig. 2 is a horizontal section taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1.
In describing my invention I shall refer to the drawings in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
he numeral 1 designates an annular fire shield, which may be formed of any desired material, such as is best applicable for the purpose described and which is substantially frusto-conical shape, provided with an open upper and lower end. The upper end of the fire shield has hingedly connected therewith as shown at 2, a perforated cover 3, that JOSEPH J. HALA'IA, 0F SCHULEIFBURG, TEXAS.

top thereof at fire shield 1, is provides the smoke for meat or the like to cure downwardly at points diametrically opposed adjacentthe outer wall of the fire shield 1. One of the arms 8 is tubular and the same is adapted to telescopically engage the standard. The said arm being held in various vertically adjusted position by means of a set screw 9 that extends therethrough, and which is clearly shown in Fig. 1 of the that upon adjustment 0 e arm 8 the entire frame will be likewise adjusted. The other arm of said frame passes through a U-shaped guide member 10 that extends from the wall of the shield opposite to the bracket 4, and which will guide the vertical movement of said frame.
Secured-to the base portion of the frame 7, is a cover 11, that is adapted to extend over the top of the fire shield, and which is of any desired shape, preferably the sha e shown in the accompanying drawings t c said coverbeing secured to the arm y a flat strap portion 12. It is obvious that upon ad ustment of the frame 7, the cover 11 will be moved toward and from the top of the fire shield, for a purpose to be hereinafter more fully described.
In operation, the fire shield is placed on the ground in a smoke house, and a fire is perforated cover 3 is then swung across the top of the fire shield, and upon adjustment of the frame 7, the cover 11 may be disposed at a predetermined distance from the top of the fire shield, to limit the amount of smoke that escapes therefrom. The operator can set the cover to the required distance, and leave Bill supporting bracket 4, that is Said shield. Positioned ield 1, and above the same 1s a I the same thereby limiting the amount of smoke that will escape within the correct time, according to the degree which it is desired to cure the meat within the smoke house. I
This device affords a very simple and economically constructed smoking device, that may be safely employed in various kinds of smoke houses. The device is absolutely safe, as the fire cannot escape therefrom. The adjustable cover makes the operation ofthistype of smoker very efficient as has been fully described.
From the above description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it is thought that a clear and comprehensive understanding of the construction, operation and advantages of my invention may be had, and while I have shown and described the device as embodying a specific structure, I desire that it be understood that such changes may be made in-said structure I as do not depart from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having fully descnbed my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A device of the class described includmg an annular fire shield, a perforated top for the same, and an adjustable cover carried by said shield and adapted to be moved toward and from said top.
2. A device of the class described including a substantially frusto-conical shaped fire shield, a perforated top hingedly connected therewith, a cover for the same,- and means for holding said cover in various vertically adjusted positions to control the outlet of smoke.
3. A device of ing a fire shield, a perforated top for the the class described includsame, a frame extending across the top thereof, a cover carried by said frame, and means for folding said frame and cover in various vertically adjusted positions.
4. A device of the class described including an annular for the same,
fire shield, a perforated top a vertically disposed substantially U- haped frame extending diametrically across the shield above the top thereof, a standard on the wall of said shield adapted to telescopically engage one arm of said frame, means for holding said arm in 'cally ad usted positions, and guide means on the shield engaging the other arm of said frame.
various vert 'In testimony whereof I aflix my signature hereto.
