IMPROVEMENT IN FOLDING CRIBS.
Speciiication forming part of Letters Patent No. 124,877, dated March 96,1872.
To all whom 'it may concer-n:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR J. BETTRIDGE, of North Bridgewater, in the county of Plymouth and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improved Portable Folding Crib for Children, Ste.; and do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specification and represented in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure l denotes a side elevation of a childs crib constructed in accordance with my invention, and Fig. 2 a vertical and central section thereof.
The object of my invention is to produce a simple, cheap, and convenient portable couch or crib for children, one which can be readily taken apart and the frame and the couch be reduced to a small compass, so that the whole can readily be packed in an ordinary' trunk. My invention is especially designed for per sons who may be traveling with young children, or parties who may be camping out for pleasure or recreation; and my invention consists in the peculiar construction of the several parts, as hereinafter fully described.
In the said drawing, A A are two arched bars, upon which the structure is supported, the same being connected by a cross-bar, B, whose ends are provided withmetallic dowels or heads to enter socketed catch-plates formed in the bars A A', as shown in Fig. 2.l The said bar is so formed as to be readily connected with the bars A A or disconnected therefrom, as circumstances may require. C C are two vertical standards, whose lower ends are' formed with cylindrical tenons to enter corresponding sockets made in the upper face of the bars A A. D is a cap or crossbar, which connects the tops of the standards C Cf, the said bar having chambers or sockets in each of its ends to receive correspondinglyshaped tenons formed on the top of the stand- Each of the said cross-bars B and D may be provided with a hinge, a, by which it may be folded together, the same also being provided with a sliding clasp, b, by which the normal position. I would remark that the said bars Band D and the standards C C' are so connected as to be readily detached whenever it may be desirable. E is a textile couch or cradle, which maybe made of canvas or other suitable textile material or materials, the body portion thereof being', by preference, of arectangular shape. Its two ends C C extend up above the sides and terminate in triangular extensions, having loops or rings d d affixed to their upper ends. The said rings are affixed to hooks projecting from "the upper parts of the two standards, as shown in the drawing. F is al folding frame of rectangular shape, which is disposed within the body of the couch,
and serves both to support a mattress and.
maintain the couch in its proper shape while being used. Each of the ends G C is provided with a transverse stretching-bar, e, disposed 1 as shown in Fig. 2.
From the above it will be seen that the couch is so suspended within the frame-work that a free rocking or swinging motion may beimparted to the former whenever desirable, and that the several parts of the frame can be readily taken apart and disposed Within a small space, or quickly set up, and the couch and mattress-frame be separated and folded, and the whole packed in a small compass for transportation or otherwise.
Having described my invention, what I claim as an improved article of manufacture, 1s-
The improved portable folding crib, the same consisting of the supporting-frame, formed in detachable and folding sections, as described, and the textile couch suspended within the frame and provided with a folding frame or mattress-supporter, the whole being constructed, combined, and arranged together in manner and for the purpose set forth.
ARTHUR J. BETTRIDGE. Witnesses: F. l?. HALE, F. C. HALE.
