Specification of Letters Patent.
Applicationfiled August 30, 1916. Serial No. 117,571.
like characters onthe drawings representing like parts.
This invention relates to sharpening" devices and is hereinshown "as embodied in a device for sharpeningpencils,
The inventionhas for its object to pro vide a simple and efficient device for the purpose specified, and one in which the parts are easily accessible for'adjustment or renewal. To this end I employ a conical cutter whichis adj ustably mountedon a post located within a shell orcasing, and islocked in its adjusted position on said post. The
conical cutter has cooperatlng with ita guide for the pencil, preferably integral with an arm pivotally mounted on the post so that the guide is rotatable about the conical cutter.
The case or shell may andpreferably will be provided with a cover, which'is detachably connected ,withtheguide arm, so as to revolve therewith and to be disconnected therefrom, when t 1S (.lQSlTQCl toreniove the chips from the case or ,shell or togain ac These cess to the parts within the same. and other features of this. invention willbe pointed out inthe claims. at the end of this specification.
Figure 1 is a plan withgthe cover broken away of a pencil sharpener embodying this invention, and j Fig. 2, a vertical central section on theline 2--2 Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawing, a represents the shell or casing which is open at its upper end and closed at its loWer end by the bottom 5, provided with an upwardly extended central hollow boss 0. The parts of the case or shell may and preferably will be made in one piece of sheet metal, which serves to reduce the weight and cost of the apparatus.
The case or shell or has located within it a conical cutter cl, provided with exterior blades 10 and with a central bore 12 having screw threads 13, which are preferably located near the upper end of the bore and are engaged with screw threads 14L on the exterior of a post 15 near the upper end thereof.
The post 15 is .made of a dianieter equal to that of the hollow boss 0, and "is provided with a reduced lower"portion ldwhich' into the hollow boss 0 and forms a shoulder 17, which rests upon the upper edge otsaid boss. The post 15 maybe securedinthe hollow boss 0 with a drivingtit or in any other suitable manner; and may and preferably will be provided with an externally thread edportion 18, which projects below the bot tom'of the case a and isengaged with a threadedsocket 19 in a base plate20,1wh1ch be provided with'suitable holes 21for the reception of screws 22, by rne ans of which the base plate maybe firmly secured toa tableydesk or other support23, The post 15 is made of greater length than the.
conical cutter (Z, so that the latter can beach justed axiallyon said post by turning-the cutter, and ithe latter maybelocked in its ad'usted position b. a nut 25" which 1 V y a gages the screw threads 14 on thepost and;
the upper endof the conical cutter.
The conical cutter (Z has cooperating Witlif it a conical hollow'guide 26 for the pencil 27 to be sharpened, said guide being attached to or integralwith a rotatable support, here- 111 shown as anarni 127, WlllCll1S I110tl11136d ongthe reduced upper end 28 of 'acenter-pm 29, and rests upontheupper end of; the post 15. The center pln 29-isextended into a cylindrical socket 3O inthe pest 15 ,*a11a. is made' of inaterialdengtlrto obtain a long; bearing which prevents tipping or tilting movement of the conical guide witliiela-tion othe conical cutter,
The case a may and preferably will be provided with a cover31 provided with a center stud or pin 32, which 'fit's into a socket 33 in the center pin 29, and said cover may be detachably connected with the guide carrying arm 127 by providing the cover with one or more holes 34: for the reception of a pin 35 carried by and projecting above the arm 127. The conical guide 26 is provided with the same inclination as the conical cutter, and is provided with a slot 40 adjacent to the cutter for the pencil to project through and engage the said. cutter.
. Patentedmec 4i 191.7,
As the cover and guide are rotated, the penpost, and when properly'positioned, the cut ter may be locked in its adjusted position against axial movement'on the post, by the nut 25,-which is turned up on the threaded I post until it engages the upper end of the conical cutter. Access may be had to the nut 25 and to the conical cutter, by slipping the cover off of the holding or connecting pin 35, which can be done in a minimum time, and thereupon the nut 25 and cutter d are made accessible for adjustment or renewal of the cutter. Furthermore it will be observed that the parts of the device are inexpensive to make, easy to assemble, and easy to adjust.
By providing the central bore of the conical cutter with screw threads and the post 15 with external screw threads, theconical cutter may be made of minimum axial length and consequently of'a minimum amount of metal, while obtaining the axial adjustment desired. The lower part of the central bore of the conical cutter is preferably made larger than the diameter of the ,threaded portion of the post to reduce the timerequired to engage the cutter with and remove it fromthe post.
It may be preferred to make the central post separate from the case, but it is not desired to limit the invention in this respect.
By adjustingthe conical cutter on the post 15, the said cutter is adjusted with relation to the guide and the amount of material removed from the pencil on each revolution of the latter is thereby regulated.
Claims: 1. In a sharpening device of the character descrlbed, 1n combmatlon a case, a substantially central post located in said case and provided with screw threads on its exterior, a conical cutter having a bore provided with screw threads to engage the screw threads on said post and axially movable on said post, a nut on the threaded post cooperating with the smaller end of the conical cutter to lock the latter in its adjusted position, a guide for the pencil, located in said case with its axis substantially parallel with the axis of said cutter and opposing the circumferential cutting surface of said cutter, and a support for said guide rotatable about said post as a center.
2. In a sharpening device of the character described, in combination, a case, a post located in said case, a conical cutter axially movable on said post, means for securing said conical cutter in fixed relation to said post, and a guide for the pencil opposing the circumferential cutting surface of said cutter and movable about the conical cutter within said case in a path concentric with the axis of said cutter.
3. In a sharpening device of the character described, in combination. a case, a substantially central post located in said case and provided with screw-tln'eads on its exterior and with a socket extended from its upper end, a conical cutter having a bore provided with screw-threads to. engage the screwthreads on said post and axially movable on said post, a nut on said threaded post cooperating with the smaller end of the conical cutter to lock the latter in its adjusted position, a guide for the pencil cooperating with the circumferential cutting surface of said cutter, and a support for said guide provided with a center pin extended into the socket in the hollow post and revoluble therein.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification.
