EDWARD LANNAY, OF MOWRYSTOWN, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT INSPARK-ARRESTERS FOR LOCOMOTIVES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 124,830, dated March 19, 1872.
and extinguishment of the sparks and cinders which escape from a locomotive-chimney.
Figure 1 is an axial section of a locomotivechimney, embodying my invention in its preferred form. Figure 2 represents a modification thereof.
Secured concentrically within the chimney proper A, is an inverted conic frustum, B, Whose lower end receives the nozzle 0 of the exhaust steam. Secured outside of the chimney A is an annular flaring-chamber or receptacle, D, closed at bottom and open at top. The upper margin of the frustum B and the receptacle D are connected by a wire-gauze bonnet, E, which is so curved over from one to the other margin as to inclose, Without touching, the upper margin of the chimney proper A. Water is kept in the bottom of receptacle D. Openings F in the outer side of the receptacle, and closed by doors Gr, afford access to receptacle from time to time to clean 7 out the ashes.
The operation is as follows: The exhaust steam passing into frustum B escapes without hindrance or the imposition of back pressure on the steam -piston, and with sufficient velocity to cause a strongupward suction through that part of the gauze-bonnet immediately over the frustum, and this in turn causes a strong ascending draught in the chimney, but not so great as to force sparks and cinders through the meshes .of the gauze-bonnet, which sparks, 850., consequently fall into the receptacle D, and, becoming extinguished by immersion in the water, there remain.
- Claim.
I claim herein as new and of my invention- An improved locomotive smoke-stack, con sisting of the external receptacle D, intermediate chimney A, inner pipe B, and hood E, the latter connected to the casing D and pipe B, all substantially as andfor the purposes set forth.
In testimony of which invention I'hereunto set my hand.
