Description
SAMUEL STEIN.
Improvement in Burial Cases.
Patented March19, 1872.
SAMUEL STEIN, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN BURIAL-CASES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No.1 24,769, dated March 19, 1872.
To whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL STEIN, of the city of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Burial-Gases and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my improved burial-case. Fig. 2 is a similar view of one of the ends of the same.
A B O D denote the silver moldings which constitute the exterior of the side frame of the case. Within each of these molded side frames two vertical posts, E E, are securely framed, which posts not only give strength'to the frame-work, but serve additional purposes, one of which is to furnish a secure means for theattaching of the handles to the case. Each side of the burial-case is provided with the glass panel I, which has its edges let into rabbets formed in the interior-of the molded frame, and it rests against the vertical posts E E, which are exterior to it. cl, filling the endsNof the case, may be made of wood or other material. The bracing-plates mm, which may be made of wood or metal, are secured against the inner surface of "the glass panels I, with their ends fitted to and fastened against the ends N, thus serving to strength en the frame and support the glass panel I. These interior bracing-plates w as may be formed as ornamental designs, which will not only brace the frame of the case, but serve as screens to obstruct the view of part of a body which the case is intended to inclose. The posts E may be constructed with central tablets, upon which handles can be fastened or they may be used as seats,to which longitudinal cylindrical rails for handles maybe fastened. Such round cxtension rails or handles may be applied to ex tend the entire length of the case, and beyond each end of the same, and be secured to the posts EC and B E.
From the foregoing description it will be un- The pair derstood that my invention relates to the construction of the frame of moldings, posts, and supports, in combination with plates of glass, secured as specified. The construction of the case would, in all essential particulars, be substantially the same if the ends N were to be constructed of two panels standing at an angle to each other-that is to say, the four upright corners of the case-may be made beveled. The bottom may be made of wood or metal, as well as may all the parts of the frame-work. The top A will be made as a frame to fit upon the moldings A, either in one or two parts, and be filled withpanels of glass, with any printed ornamental design thereon.
It is evident that the glass side panels, as well as the glass top panel or panels, may be ornamentedor ground, leaving a circular portion of the top panel at the head of the case transparent.
The above-described manner of constructing the frame with the supports E and interior bracing 00 .90 is necessary, not only to enable the handles to be attached at their proper location, but to prevent any flexibility of the frame, which, in handling, would cause the glass to be broken. Besides bracing the frame and retainin g the side panels of glass in their place, the interior supports m at serve as linings to protect the glass side panels from contact with the body, which it incloses when in use.
Having described my new manner of constructing burial-cases, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination and arrangement of the posts E E with the glass-paneled burial-case for supportingthe handles thereof, as specified.
2. In combination with the elements of the preceding claim, bracing supports 00 as in the interior of the case, as described.
In testimony hereof I have hereunto set my hand this 6th day of January, A. D. 1873.
SAMUEL STEIN.
