Jrzvnlan QZeri Q/Yusa ALBERT anusnnir, or'ciiiciiqo, ii tnrois To al l it may concern i Be it known that I, ALBERT ArI-Iusicisr, a-
v citizen of theUnited State's, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Phonographe'Cabinets and Packing-Cases Therefor,'of which the following'isa specification. In packing and shipping phonograph cabinets, considerable difliculty has heretofore been experienced in packing the. cab
nets in such'a' way as to preventchafing and abrasion of the polishedand ornamental exterior surface of the cabinet by the packing case and the filling and supporting elements within-the latter that are designed "to hold the cabinet against movement within -the case. 5 So-far as I am aware it has hereto fore been the practice to build the-case in such a size-as to contain the cabinet with slight top and side clearance, and to rely upon filling strips surfaced on their cabinetv engaging sides with felt, clothor like material to support the cabinet against relative movement within the case. 7
My present invention is designed to pro vide a cabinet and packing case with means positively and rigidly uniting the two temporarily during shipment so as to prevent any movement ofthe cabinet within the case and consequent chafing and marringof the cabinet, a further object being. to provide a means of this sort of such a character as to not require inits application any discabinet'to theadjacent side ofthepacking fi urement of the cabinet or any alteration of its present standard construction. v
In order that my invention may be readily understood and practised by those acquainted withipacking instrume'ntalities of this general nature, I have illustrated the same in the accompanying drawings in Which c Figure 1 is a vertical section of a packing case with a phonograph cabinet placed therein, the latter being partly broken out and in section and showing my improved means for rigidly connecting a side of the case; and V v r Fig. 2 is a rear view of the packing case and cabinet, partly broken away and 111'VBI' tical section at" top and bottom.
Referring tQthG drawing, 5 designates as. an entirety a phonograph cabinet ofthe conventional upright formy'at presentdextensively known and used, and 6 designates as [s cification meagre rateiit.

San. entirety-"a packing case therefor. Theintersecting bars or rails 7 and 8 in a manher which permits the feet and casters to.
bottom wall of the packing case, thelowerend of the cabinet being secured against lateral movement relatively to the case by .means such as screws 9 passing-through. the 'rails ;8 'of'the case and into the. base board flOofthe cabinet.. i. a
. To the topwallof the cabinet is secured -a wooden strip 11 covered on its lower sur- 1 face with cloth or felt 12'and bearing di- -rectly on the top of'the lid I or 'covering of the cabinet.
rIhe attachments of the packinglcase thus far described for engaging with the top and-bottom of the cabinet have heretofore been known and practised! in: the packing and shipping of phonograph cabinets, but
alone they have been found altogether inadequate to prevent relative movement'of the cabinet within the case during transit and consequent greater or lessinarring or chafing'of the ornamental surface finish of 1 the cabinet.
' My present inventiontakes advantage of the fact that most cabinets of this type are, .provided'with a removable panel in the rear wall of the cabinet, the opening covered by said panelbeing indicated at 13 in Fig. 1. In accordance with my invention I secure to the two rear legs 14 of they cabinet a stout wooden strip 15 which extends across the upper portion of the opening 13. To the outer side of this strip 15 are secured as by, screws 16' a pair of spacing blocks 17 which extend through the opening 13 and at their outer ends abut against the rear wall, 6 of the packing case. To and across the back wall 6 of the packing case is secured another stout wooden strip 18, the ends of which are countersunk to bear against the corner frame members 6 of the case, being strongly secured to-the latter byscrews 19, i
while the intermediate portion of the strip.
or'bar 18 bears against the inner back wall c 6.. of the case directly opposite of the outer ends of the blocks 17. Through the bar 18 and the blocks 17 are inserted longscrews 20, which preferably enter the inner strip or cleat 15, as shown in Fig. 1.v By this means the upper portion of the cabinet is strongly and rigidly united to a wall of the packing case, so. that relative movement 2 p 7 i V 7 1,333,668
a between the two tinder" the w more or less rough handling which the {packing cases receive in shi ment is ren eredyimpossible, and the rub ing. and marring of the surface of the cabinet heretofore frequently experienced under methods of packing are avoided.
' The bar or cleat is builti-nw the cabian net as a permanent element thereof, so that,
in removing thecabinet from thecase, it 18 necessary only to withdraw. screws 16 and 20, "which frees the bracing blocks 17 L and enables the cabinet to be "readily Withdraw-111mm the casing, When the rear panel is in place, the presencewof tliepacking strip or cleat is, ofcourseentirely conrcealed.
