SKIRT-HANGEE.
provements in Skirt-Hangers, of which the followingis a specification.
Thls lnvention is an improved hanger for skirts and the like, the object of the invention being to provide an improved device of this character which is simple in construction, is light, strong and durable and which is variable in length and automatically adjusts itself to the width of the skirt or other garment hung thereon.
The invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
In the' accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is partly an elevation and partly a sectional view of a skirt hanger constructed and arranged in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a plan of the same.
Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the same oFn the plan indicated by the line 3-3 of In the construction of my improved skirt and coat han er I provide a pairof tubes 1, 2 of suita%le length and diameter and which in practice may be made of cheap sheet metal. The tube 1 is .telescopically arran ed in the tube 2 so that the bar formed by t e said tubes is adjustable longitudinally and adapted for use in hanging a skirt or coat of any Width. Each of the tubes is provided in its upper side with a longitudinal slot 3. Said slots are open at the outer ends of the tubes. Tube'l is provided at its inner end with a collar 4 which forms a stop and closesthe correspondin end of the slot 3 of said tube. The tube 2 as a collar 5 at its inner end which forms a stop and closes the inner end of the-slot 3 of said tube.
A block 7 is secured to and closes the outer end of each tube. Each of the said blocks is made of sheet metal and is substantially tJ-shaped in plan, providing an outer face 8 adapted to engage the garment and also providing a pair of sides or walls 9 on opposite sides of the'tube. The face 8 is roughened as at 10 to engage the garment and I Specification of Letters Patent.
each block is provided with a downwardly and outwardly extending arm 11, shaped to correspond apportionately with that portion Patented Nov. 2d, 191W. Application filed October 25, 1916. Serial No. 127,666.
of the garment engaged. with the hanger.
Each arm 11 is made of a piece of Ll-shaped wire as here shown. I
The tubes 1, 2 being telescopically related,
the bar which is formed by said tubes is longitudinally adjustable and hence the hanger maybe adjusted in length according to the width of the garment to be hung thereby. A coil extensile spring 12 extends longitudinally through the-tubes 1, 2, its ends bearing against the blocks. The central portion of the coil spring is engaged by the inturned end 13 of a connector 14: which is here shown as made of iron and which passes around the tube 2 and is formed at its upper end with an eye 15 which is engaged by a suspending hook 16. The arm 13 of the connector passes through and is arranged to operate in the slots of the tubes. The spring acts to longitudinally extend the hanger on the bar formed by the tubes thereof by permitting the hanger to be shortened as required by the garment. The arm 13 coacts with the collars 4:, 5 to form stops which limit the extent of outward movement of the tubes.
While I have herein shown and described a preferred form of my invention I would have it understood that changes may be .made in the form, proportion and construction of the several parts without departing from the spirit of my invention and within the scope of my claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim 15: 1
A longitudinally adjustable hanger of the class described comprising a pair of telescopically arranged tubes, one slidable longitudinally in-the other and a coil spring in said tubes and connected thereto to normall hold'the hanger in extended condition, eac of the said tubes being provided with a longitudinal slot, said slots being coincident with each other, and a suspending device for the hanger attached to the outer tube havin an arm extending through said slots an engaging the central portion of said spring. In testimony whereof I afiix m signature.
