ed an Improvement in Boxes, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings is a specification, like characters on the drawings representing like parts. l
This invention relates to boxes and per= tains more particularly to boxes comprising cleats and sheet metal sides..
Among other objects, the invention is 1ntended to provide a box which shall be very strong and durable and economical to manufacture. The invention comprises, also, a method of makin boxes.

The illustrative blank comprises cleats 6 and 7 and a preferably continuous metal side sheet 8 secured to. the cleats in any practicable manner as, for instance, by staples 9, 9 driven through the sheet metal sides and into the cleats.
As shown in Fig. 2 there are four cleats, and the extremities of the metal sheet 8 are appropriately cut-to form connecting tabs 11, 11 and 12, l2. v
As shown in Fig. 1, the `adjacent ends of the cleats 6 and 7 arel spaced apa-rt a distance substantially equal to the combined thicknesses of the cleats 6 and 7 so that when the blank is folded into box form as shown in Fig. 3,that part of the side material which in the blank intervenes between the cleat ends, will, in the folded box, extend across the .cleat ends and constitute a side of the box. Thecleats in the illustrative forni of box are arranged to Contact lengthwise and constitute the closures at theends of the box. A metal side sheet 8 has end margins 15 and 16 which overlap as shown in 1F ig. 3, when the box is closed;and` `tabs 11 and 12 are arranged to be bent out from the respective end margins 15 and' 16 so that-said tabs will contact with each other. Also, the tabs may be provided with means for securing them together; for example, they may have holes to receive eyelets or rivets such as rivets 18, 18.
There are many advantages in a box of the general character described. The strength and durability of thesheet metal sides are combined with the sti'ness'of preferably wooden cleats, so that the box is exltremely strong land durable.
lt is to be understood that the invention lis not limited to the specic construction and organization-'described above nor to the particular method described for' illustration. On the contrary, the invention may be variously embodiedin boxes and other receptacles (all of which are intended to be included within the nieanin of the word box as used in the clainis` and various modications may be made in the described method. l
Claims:
1. A box comprising sides formed of a continuous folded strip of sheet metal and wooden end pieces secured to said sides and maintaining them in box-like form, said end pieces comprising a plurality of separable parts secured to separate side-forming portions of said strip.
2. A box comprising sides formed of a continuous folded strip of sheet metal and wooden cleats secured 'to the strip and mating to close the ends 'of the box and to retain the sides in box-like form.
3. A box comprising, in combination, a group of cleats at each end of the box including two cleats substantially contacting lengthwise; sheet metal side material at opposite sides of said cleats; and means to securey the parts together.
4. A box comprising, in combination, a group of cleats at each end of the box, including two cleats substantially contacting lengthwise; sheet metal side material folded transversely of the ends of said cleats, and along the sides thereof to form the box sides; and means to secure the parts together.
5. A box having end closures and sides lll@ formed from a sheet of sti, bendable ma.- terial encircling the ends and lapping on itself, said edges being slit to provide tongues which are secured together in abutting contact.'
6. A method of making boxes which comprises assembling separate cleats with sheet metal side material; and securing the sheet metal side material to the cleats placed end to end so as to connect said cleats flexibly by the sheet metal'side material.
7 A method of making boxes which comprises assembling a plurality of rows of cleats, the cleats in each row being'allned end to end, and a substantially continuous sheet of metal side material bridging the intervals between said cleats, and securing the cleats and sheet metal side material together to form a foldable blank.

A method of making boxes which comprises assembling sheet metal side material with cleats havin their ends spaced apart a distance substantlally equal tothe combined widths of said cleats and securing the sheet metal side material to the cleats and across said interval to connect the cleats flexibly by said sheet material to form a foldable box blank with the cleats arranged substantially to contact lengthwise when the blank is folded.
