Description

J. L. STEVENS.
} Egg-Carrier. v No. 212,281. Patented Feb. 11,1879.
rier tray, as will be hereinafter more fully set UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN L. STEVENS, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO WILLIAM H. HARRIS, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN EGG-CARRIERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 212,281, dated February 11, 1879 application filed January 8, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN L. STEVENs, of Chicago, in the county of Cook, and in the State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Egg-Carriers; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of an egg-carforth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my eggcarrier tray. Fig. 2 shows the difierent pieces of which the tray is composed.
My eggcarrier trayis composed of strips AA and B B, of pasteboard or other suitable material. The strips A are formed with slots a at suitable intervals, and extending from one edge inward for one-half the width of the strip, so that the strips can be made to interlock when put together. At each end of the strip A is formed a tongue, 1), with slot (1 through it. The strips A A form the interior of the tray, while the strips B are used as outside strips, one on each side. Each strip B is pro- 1 vided with a series of central slots, 1), correspondin g in size with the tongues D of the strips A. At one end of each strip B is formed a tongue, 0, having a slot, through it. This tongue is passed through a slot, 1), in the ad jacent side strip, B. When the tray has been thus put together-the strips A A being interlocked and their tongues D passed through the slots 1) in the strips B, and the tongue 0 of each strip B passed through the slot 1) of the adjacent stripa narrow strip, F, is passed on each side of the tray through the slots in the protruding tongues, thereby lockin g the strips of the tray together.
The tray can be folded close together formturn shipment without separating the different strips.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
An egg-carrier tray composed of the strips A, having slots at and slotted tongues D, the strips B, having slots 1) b and slotted tongue O, and the locking-strips F, substantially as herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 14th day of November, 1878.
JOHN L. STEVENS.
