MMIII CARD-FILING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 22, 191'?.
Application filed May 8, 1917. Serial No. 167,209.
To all 'whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, EDWARD S'rnAssnL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, borough of Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Card-Filing Devices, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specication.
This invention relates to a class of devices adapted to be used for permitting records to be kept in a convenient manner. l
My invention has for its object primarily to provide a simple, eiiicient and durable ling device whereby cards and the like on which the names and addresses of persons as well as records of various subject matters are indexed may be kept for ready reference, and which is of a form consisting mainly of a drawer adapted to be applied to a casing with an opening so as to be movable inwardly and outwardly thereof. The drawer is preferably composed of two interiitting extensibly movable members so that cards may be arranged in closely packed order therein as well as permitting of being spaced apart for easy selection, and in the upper parts of the members of the drawer may be provided spaced supports of forms which are extensibly adjustable in unison with the movements of the members.
Other objects of the invention are to provide stops whereby the relative movements of the members of the drawer will be limited; and to provide on the casing of the drawer a stop to prevent accidental separation of the drawer therefrom.
A vpractical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, and will then be pointed out in the claims at the end of the description.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective View of one form of card filing device embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view, partly in detail, taken on the line II-II of Fig. 1, and y Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view taken on the line III-III of Fig. 2.
The card filing device has a casing, or cabinet l0 which may be of any desired shape and size, though the casing illustrated is substantially rectangular with an open end, and the interior of the casing may be divided by vertical and transverse partitions, as 11 and 12, for providing a number of chambers vleading into the casing from its open end, or forms of the casing may be made with only one chamber.
Movable inwardly and outwardly of the open end of each chamber of the casing is a drawer 13 composed of two intertting extensibly movable members, as 14 and 15. The member 14 of the drawer has a rear vertical wall 16 of an approximately square shape of a size to slidably tit closely in the chamber of the casing, and extending forwardly from the lower corners of this wall are two similar bars, or elongated plates, as 17 and 18, which are disposed in spaced parallel arrangement. Each of the bars 17 and 18 are preferably substantially L- shaped, in cross-section, to provide each with a horizontal arm 19 and a vertical arm 20. Both of these L-shaped bars are disposed so that their horizontal arms extend from the lower edge of the rear wall 16 of the member 14, while their vertical arms extend from the side edges of the rear wall, and the free ends of the bars are held against movement by a strip, or bar 21 connecting the longitudinal arms of the bars. The member 15 of the drawer has a vertically disposed front wall 22 of a size so as to removably fit closely in the open end of its chamber of the casing 10, and extending rearwardly of the lower corners of the front wall are two corresponding bars, or elongated plates 23 and 24 also disposed in spaced parallel arrangement. These bars of the member 15 are disposed so as to slidably interit in the member 14 of the drawer, the bars being of slightly less lengths as well as being of somewhat narrower widths than the bars of the member 14. rIhe bars 23 and 24 of the member 15 arel also preferably substantially L-shaped, in cross-section, to provide each with a horizontal arm 25 and a vertical arm 26. These L-shaped bars are arranged so that their horizontal arms extend from the lower edge of the front wall 22 of the member 15, while their vertical arms extend from the side edges of this front wall, and the free ends of the bars are held against movement `by a strip, or bar 27 connecting the horizontal arms of the bars. By forming the drawer in this manner the member 15 is slidably adjustable inwardly and outwardly ofthe member 14 so that the drawer in entirety will be extensibly movable in the casing 10.
Serving as means whereby the relative movements of the members 14 and 15 may be extensibly limited stops, as 28 and 29, are
rovided. These stops are preferably in the forms of pins, both projecting outwardly in alinement in opposite directions from the end parts of the vertical arms 26 of the bars 23 and 24 of the member 15, and these pins, or stops are movably disposed in regis tered slots, as 30 and 31, provided lengthwise in the vertical arms 20, respectively, of the bars 17 and 18 of the member 14 of the drawer. The slots 30 and 31 are of lengths so that when the mem'ber 15 of the drawer is guided outwardly of the member 14 these pins will contact with the forward ends of the slots, and in turn the relative extensible movements of the drawer will be limited.
Also servingvto prevent accidental sepa` ration of the drawer from its casing, on the underside of the top wall 32 of the casing 10 in proximity to the open end of the chamber of the drawer is a stop 33 which is preferably in the form of a transverse strip of a width so that when the drawer is withdrawn outwardly of the casing a desired distance the rear wall 16 of the member 14 will contact with the upper end of this stop, or strip to prevent the drawer from separating from the casing.
In order to permit index cards, as 34, to be slidably as well as removably carried in the drawer for keeping reference records thereon of the names and addresses of persons, and other various subject matters, in the upper part of the drawer are provided supports, as 35 and 36, which are preferably alike in formation. Both of the supports 35 and 36 are extensibly adjustable, and each support may consist of two flat rods 37, 37a and 38, 38. The rods 37, 37a of the supports extend into the drawer in spaced parallel arrangement from the rear wall 16 ofthe member 14 of the drawer so as to be spaced a suitable distance above the L- shaped bars 17 and 18 of this member, and these rods are of similar lengths to the lengths of the L-shaped bars thereunder. The rods 38, 38a of the supports extend also into the drawer from the front wall 22 of the member 15 with each other as well as With the rods 37 37EL so as to slidably contact with the rods 37, 37, and the rods 38, 38a are of lengths corresponding to the lengths of the L- shaped bars 23 and 24 of the member 15. lengthwise of the rods 37 37a of the supports 35 and v36 are registered elongated slots 39, 39, and movable in these slots are pins 40 projecting laterally from the ends of the rods 38, 38a of the supports. Through the Through the central parts central parts lengthwise of the rods 38, 38a of the supports 35 and 36 are registered elongated slots 41, 41a, and movable in these slots are pins 42 protruding laterally from the ends of the rods 37 37a of the supports. By making the supports 35 and 36 in these forms they are adapted to be extensibly adjusted according to the movements of the members of thedrawer so that index cards, especially of the types illustrated, may be slidably and removably mounted on the supports in the drawer in closely packed order, and when the members of the drawers are extensibly pulled outwardly of the -casing the cards may be spaced apart for ready selection and reference.
In the foregoing description, I have embodied the preferred form of my invention, but I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself thereto, as I am aware that modiications may be made therein without departing from the principle, or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention, therefore I reserve to myself the right to make such changes as fairly fall within the scope thereof. Y
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:-
