To all whom it may concern.'

Be it knownthat I, ADoLrH A. I-IUNzrKnR, a citizen of the United States of America, a resid-ent of Maplewood, in the county of St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Easels, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.

My invention relates to van easel for supporting show cards, advertising signs, and the like, such as are ordinarily displayed in stores, the easel comprising essentially a member by which it may beattached to the show card or sign, a supporting wing hinged to said attaching member, anda retaining member hinged tothe attaching member and interlocked with the supporting wing. The invention has for its object a construction that will provide aninterlocking connection between the retaining member and the supporting wing which is simple and so positive as to avoid liability of the separation of the parts whilel the easel is in service, but which may be readily 'disengaged without detracting from the ability of the'parts to perform their function when the interlocking connection is restablished. y

My easel is preferably formed from a single sheet A of suitable material, for example, cardboard, the construction illustrated in Figs. I to IV, inclusive, including a front section 1, a pair of side wings 2 hinged to the side edges of the frontsection so that said Wings may be folded into parallel relationship to serve as supports for the front Isection 1 and the display card, or other article to which the front section is attached. The hinging of the side wings 2 to the front section 1 is preferably provided for by creasing or scoring the sheet of material from which the easel is formed along lines at which the hinges are to exist.

the cutting being so accomplished as to leave anend ofthe retaining wing connected to the front'section l, and this end is hinged to the front section, as seen at A, so that the retaining wing may be bent rearwardly to occupy a position between lthe pair of supporting wings 2. Theretaining wing 3 is provided with side tongues 5 cut from the material in the supporting wings 2 before the sheet A is folded on the hinge lines a, Fig. IV, in forming the blank of the easel. The tongues are preferably located intermediate of the ends of the retaining wing, thereby providing an end extension `6 beyond the tongues with an object in view which will hereinafter appear.

In each of the side wings 2 is a slot 7 adapted to receive one of the tongues 5 of the retaining wing 3. rl`hese slots extend transversely, lor approximately horizontally, in the side wings and they are of widths corresponding approximately to the thicknesses of the tongues 5 and atleast partially curved, as shown, necessitating bowing of the tongues 5 previous to passage through said narrow slots to secure the side wings to the retaining'wing. The `said tongues are easily bowed for passage through the slots,

Y but immediately after their passage through theslots straighten out so that they bear 'against the outer faces of the side wings, and partially out of alinement with the narrow slots, and therefore confine the side wings between the tongues 5 and the side edges of the retaining wing 3. An exten sion 6 of the retaining wing projecting beyond the tongues 5 provides abutnients at the rear end of the retaining wing against which the inside faces of the side wings bear, in addition to their bearing against the edges of the retaining wing in front of the tongues 5, and the interlocking connection between the retaining wing and the side wings is therefore much more substantial than it would be in the absence of the extension 6.

In Fig. V I have shown a modified form of my easel, the construction here shown comprising a front section la and a single side wing 2a hinged thereto and having a curved slot 7a therein. This modified construction also includes a retaining wing 3a cut from the front section and provided with a tongue 5a which extends through the curved slot 7u to hold the side wing at substantially a right angle to the front section. The modified. constructionidilers essentially from the .previously described construction, mainly in that it includes only a single side Wing instead of a pair of side Wings.
