CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
DOOR CHECK AND CLOSER.
Application filed March 14, 1917. Serial No. 154,781.
To all 'whom it may concern:
I3e it known that I, Joint Hermann, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and
State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door Checks and Closers, of which the following is a specification. y p h My lllVQIltlOniIQlfltQS to automatlc door ClOSIIIg aHCl ClIECkIHg devices that are adapted to be carried partly by the door and partly by the casingsurrounding the same in a manner similar to that disclosed in Let ters Patent of the United States issued to me under date of March 30, 1915, No. 1,133,725, for an improved door check and closer. In a device of this Character the door is closed by means of a Suitable contraction spring inclosed within the cylinder andhollow piston rod and is checked or re tar'ded in itsmovement through the medium vision of a novel piston head that is 'constructed in a manner so that the air may pass easily through the piston head and the piston from one side to the other as the,
door is opened, but will be compressed in front of the piston headas the door is closed and will thereby check or retard the closing of the same. v y
A further object of my present invention is the provision in a door closing and checking device ofsuitable novel means for retaining the flexible "ring or washer of the piston head in close contact with the interior ofpthe cylinder and preventleakage of air around the same. 7
Other objectsof my'invention comprise the provision of a door closing and check ing device that is comparatively simple in construction, economical to and dependable in its operationfl I prefer to accomplish the divers objects of my invention by substantially the means and in substantially the manner hereinafter fully'set forth and described, reference bemanufacture,
ing had to the accompanying formlng where1n,-
drawings a part of this specification,
Figure 1 is a top plan of my closing and checking device attached to a door and casing, the door. being partly opened forthe purpose of illustrating the relative positions of the elements of my device.
fig. 2 is a longitudinal front elevation thereof.
Fig. 3 is a central longitudinal section taken through the cylinder, piston rod, and piston head.
Fig. dis a fragmental section showing the parts of the piston head in the relation assumed during a compression stroke.
Fig. 5 is a transverse section on line 5-5 of Fig. 4, particularly showing an arrangement of the spring for expanding the cupwasher. p h
"Fig. 6 is a perspective view showing a modified structure for expanding the cupwasher.
In the drawings similar reference char acters have been employed to designate the same parts throughout the divers figures thereof.
Referring more particularly to Figs. 1, 2
and '3 of the drawings, it will be observed the devicepreferably comprises an elongated cylinder or tubular member 10, wherein a.
suitable hollow piston rod 11 is adapted to reciprocate while a coiled contraction spring 12 is inclosedin" said piston rod, one end of said spring being adapted to extend out through the inner end of hollow piston rod 11 and is connectedto the closure cap 13 Specification of Letters Patent. Patgnt fl N 2% 1191*? i screwed or otherwise secured tothe adjacent end of the cylinder 10. The opposite end of said spring is connected by an elongated bolt 14 to the opposite or outer end of the piston rod 11, said bolt being provided with a fiat sided or squared shank 15 that fits into a correspondingly shaped opening 16 in a washer 17 disposed in the end of the piston rod. In order that the head of the bolt may be conveniently seated in the washer, the
latter is preferably constructed in a concave manner, 'asshown, so that when the cap 18 of said piston rod 1s screwed onto the end bol this tappedor screwed into around or cylindrical nut19 that is frictionally held thereof, nit will press against said washer and thereby prevent the rotation of the bolt 14. p The elongated threaded portion of the in the adjacentend'" ofthe coiled-spring 12, and it Will be observed that by releasing'the CYlilIClQRlOfflDd rotating ThllQFISHDIB inithe: on'ei rod, the nut 19 Will be screwed up or down on the bolt 14, thereby extending -oweon-" tracting the spring 12, and cause the same tolexer't greaterkorulesssitension ini closing thedoor.
