'. IMPROVEMENT IN RAILWAY SWITCHES.
Specification forming part'of Letters Patent No. 124,719, dated March 19, 1872.
Specification describing a new and Improved Railroad SWitchChair and Rod, invented by PATRICK GARRIGAN, of Sturgeon, in the county of Boone and State of Missouri.
Figure 1 is a detail cross-section of my improved railroad switch taken through the line :v x, Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a top viewof the same.
Similar letters of refe-rence indicate corresponding parts.
My invention has for its object to improve the construction of railroad switches in such a way as to cause the rails to be securely held in place when adj usted, and so that the weight of the sliding or movable rails will bring them exactly in line with the stationary rails should they be moved by the switch-rod a little too far or not quite far enough 5 and it consists mainly in providing V- shaped recesses on the rail-chair and switch-rod, as hereinafter described. Y
A are the movable rails. B are the stationary rails of various tracks, with any desirable set of which the movable rails Amay be adjusted to connect, as may be desired, and which are inserted in sockets c formed upon the upp'er part of the switch-chair C. C is the switchchair i* block, whichis grooved to receive the switch-rod D.- The switch-rod D may be made jointed, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, or rigid, as may be desired. The outer end of the switch-rod D is pivoted to the lower end of the switchdever E, which is pivoted to the stand F in the ordinary manner. Upon the upper side of the rod D are formed sockets or chairs to receive the ends of the movable rails A. Upon the under side of the rod D are formed V-shaped projections Gr, which enter V-sha-ped recesses H in the bottom of the groove in the chair or block C, in which the said rod works. Upon the upper side of the chair G are formed V-shaped projections I, in
such positions as to be at the sides of the movable rails A when adjusted to connect with either set of the rails B. The projections Gr and I, or either of them, hold the rails securely in place when adjusted, and, at the same time, the inclined sides of said projections cause the rails A to slide into line with the stationary rails B should they be moved a little too far or not quite far enough by the lever E.
My invention thus differs materially from those in which the ends of the rails fxtin sockets formed with straight sides, since, in the latter case, the rails will not enter the sockets unless a very perfect adjustment be first effected by the operation of the switch-rod and lever.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The V-shaped projections G formed upon the under side of the switch-rod D, and operating in connection with the V-shaped recesses H formed in the bottom of the groove in the 11i y l PATRICK -l CARRIGAN.
