In Figs. I, II, III and IV the blade 1 of the spade is provided with a socket 2 into which fits the hollow shaft 3. Within the shaft is located a slidable plug 4, to which two arms 5 and 6, which when open form the beam of the scales, are pivoted at 7. To either end of the beam are pivoted, at 8 and 9, two curved arms 10 and 11, to which are pivoted, at 12 and 13, two scale pans 14 and 15. These scale pans are supported beneath, when open, by two cylindrical tubes 16 and 17, one of which, 17, is of less diameter than the other and which fits within the other when the scales are closed, so as to form a spade handle. The plug t is provided with a spring catch 18, to retain the plug in post tion when the. scales are; in'use. "Tithe arms 10 and 11 in this modification are formed as the two halves of a longitudinally divided shaft to the lower ends of which are attached the two halves 23 and 24 of a longitudinally divided crutch handle. The scale pans in this modification are formed of flat disks and fold up into recesses 25 and 26 cut in the arms 10 and 11 when out of use. The blade of the spade together with the socket may be formed of wood, so also may the handle and arms 10 and 11.

Then the toy as shown in' Figs. I to IV is in use the blade may be detached from the rest of the device and used as a shovel, the

stem of the device being thrust into the sand,

soil or other supporting material to retain the scales in an operable position.

WVhat I claim is:

1. A combination toy consisting of an implement; a shaft secured to said implement;

a slidable sleeve mounted on said shaft; a foldingbeam adapted to be inclosed by said sleeve when in the closed position and; to be supported by said shaft when in the open position; arms carrying scale pans pivoted to I said beam and adapted to fold up and form the handle of the implement when in the closed position.

2. A combination toy consisting of an implement; a shaft secured to said implement;

a slidable sleeve mounted on said shaft; a

folding beam pivoted to said shaft and adapted to be inclosed by said sleeve when in the closed position and to be supported by said shaft when in the open position; arms carrying scale pans pivotally connected to them, said arms being capable of being folded up and held in the folded position to form a handle by the slidable sleeve.

3. A combination toy consisting of an implement; a shaft member secured to said implement; a slide member supported by said shaft member; a folding beam connected to one of said members so as to be operatively supported by the shaft member when the slide member is in one adjustment and adapted to be collapsed to form a prolongation of the shaft member when the slide member is in another adjustment.

4. A combination toy consisting of an implement; a shaft member secured to said implement; a slide member supported by said shaft member; a folding beam connected to one of said members so as to be operatively supported by the shaft member when the slide member is in one adjustment and adapted to be collapsed to form a prolongation of the shaft member when the slide member is in another adjustment; and arms carrying scale pans pivoted to said beam and adapted to fold up and form the handle of the implement when the folding beam is collapsed.

6. A combination toy consisting of an implement; a shaft member secured to said implement; a slide member supported by said shaft member; a folding beam connected to one of said members so as to be operatively supported by the shaft member when the slide member is in one adjustment and adapted to be collapsed to form a prolongation of the shaft member when the slide member is in another adjustment; and arms carrying scale pans pivotally connected to them, said arms being capable of being; folded up and held in the folded position to form a handle by the adjustment of the slide member to tie position second mentioned.
