BROOCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed August 2, 1916. Serial No. 112,686.
` To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that l, ALFRED SPANEY, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Piermont, Rockland county, in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brooches, ofwhich the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
This invention relates to improvements in jewelry, and has for its object more particularly to provide a brooch comprising a lplurality of parts or members one of which may be worn separately or in combination with oneV or'more of the other parts.
One of Vthe objects of the invention is to provide a brooch comprising a main or pin member and a supplemental member adapted to be fitted thereon in order to form a brooch therewith. y l I VAnother object of the invention isl to provide a ybrooch comprising a plurality of members adapted to be assembled to present the appearance of a single brooch, and still permit Vof the removal or'changing of some of the members. Y
Another object of the invention is to provide a brooch set comprising a plurality of members of different designs any one of which is adapted lto be tted to another 'member to form a brooch whereby a plurality of brooches of different designs may be formed.
Another object of the invention is to'provide a broochhaving a recessed portion to receive any one of a series of separable members which may be of various colors or combination of colors so that the brooch may be made to harmonize with the gown of the wearer.
Other objects will in part be obvious and in part pointed out hereinafter.
To the attainment of the aforesaid objects and ends, my invention consists in the novel details of construction, and in the combination, connection and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described and then pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings showing i illustrative embodiments of the invention- Figurel is a front view of one form of brooch constructed according to and embodying my said invention; f
ig. 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. l;
Fig. 3 is a front view member separated from member;
of the main or pin the supplemental Fig. 4 is a side view thereof; y Fig.l 5 is a front View ofthe supplemental member separatedfrom the main or pin p member; i
Fig. 6-isa front view of a'mainor pin member of a different design than that shown in Fig. 3;
Fig. 7 is a front view of another form of brooch,
Fig. 8 is a sectional view taken on the line 8 8 of Fig. 7, and l t Figi? is a sectional view on the line 9-9, Fig. 7 i Referring to Figs. 1 to 5 inclusive ofthe drawings the brooch 10 is shown composed of a main or pin member 11 andarsupple mental member 12 adapted to be fitted thereon. It will, of course, be understood that the members 11 and 12 may be of any suitable shape, size or'design, and that they may be jewele'dor not as desired without in` any way departingy fromA the spirit of the invention which does not relate tothe particular shape, size'or design ofthe brooch or they parts thereof.
Secured to the back 11,' which for purposes' of illustration isA shown in the form of a bar or breast pin, is
a hinged 'pin l'and a catch 15 of usual construction'for'fastening the member to an article of clothing. .at the rear of the member 11, and concealed from view from the front thereof, is a threaded socket 16 thepurpose of which will be explained hereinafter.
The supplemental member 12, as shown, comprises two portions 17 ,17 spaced from one another and united by connecting members 18, v1S, and 19 the front surfaces of which lie in rear of the front surfaces of the spaced portions 17 to'providea seat for the Patented Nev. 13, 191.7.
detachably I y of the main member y main member 11 which, when the members of theJ brooch are assembled, is positioned be-l tween the spaced portions 17, 17 of the supplemental member 12 with'tliepin' lsl'in rear yof the connecting members 18,V 18, 'and 19. 4 l kRotatably supported upon the'connecting member 19 is a screw 2O having' its threaded end extending forwardly 'whereby it is adapted to engage the threaded socket 16 in the main member 11 to hold'the 'members 1l p and 12 against relative movement when theyV are assembled to form a brooch. Thescrew y 2O has a reduced shank portion 21 engaging a hole l22 in the connectingv member 19,' and F a head QSen'gaging the rear surface ofthe connecting member 19 whereby lthe screwQQv ion Vmembers of different shape, size is held against longitudinal movement. A finger gripping member 24, for rotating the screw 20, is hinged to the head 23 thereof to permit of its being folded into substantial parallelism with the rear surface of the brooch whereby it will not interfere with the fastening of the brooch to an article of clothing by means of the pin 14 and catch 15.
Fig. 6 shows a main or pin member 25 diering in design from the one shown in Fig. 3, and adapted to be assembled with the supplemental member 12 in the manner above described to form a brooch, the design or appearance of which will differ from the design or appearance of the brooch formed by the assembling of the main member 11 with the supplemental member 12. Furthermore the jewels upon one of the main members may be of different color than those upon the other main member' whereby the color scheme of the assembled brooches may be varied at will, or to harmonize with the color of the gown of the wearer.
1t will thus be seen that a brooch set is provided consisting of a' plurality of main members of dierent shape, size or design, and a supplemental member. In' use any one of vthe main members may be worn by itself as a breast pin, or any one of them may be assembled with the supplemental member to form a brooch whereby it is possible to form a plurality of brooches diering from one another in appearance.
1t will, of course, be understood that it is within the scope of the invention to provide a brooch set consisting of but one main member and a plurality of supplemental or design, is adapted to be assemmember whereby a plurality of brooches may be formed, or if desired a brooch set may be provided consisting of a plurality of main members and a plurality of supplemental members any one of which supplemental members may be assembled with any one of the main members to form a brooch.
Referring to Figs. 7, S and 9, there is shown a modiiied form of the invention. In these iigures the brooch 26 comprises a main member 27 and two supplemental members 28 and 29 adapted to be fitted thereto. The main member 27 is similar in construction to the main members 11 and 25 and is adapted to be secured to the supplemental member 28 in the manner hereinbefore described. The supplemental member 28, which is similar in construction to the supplemental member 12, comprises two spaced portions united by connecting members 30, 30, and 80a. The supplemental member 29, which in its asany one of which bled with the main lsembled position is adapted to embrace the supplemental member 28, comprises two spaced portions united by connecting members '31 adapted to be positioned alongside Vplemental member 29 is tained in position when in use by the friction between the co-engagig surfaces of said supplemental member and the supplemental member 28 and by the portion of the clothing which lies between the pin and the rear surface of the brooch.
