IMPROVEMENT IN DUST-BRUSHES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 124,634, dated March 12, 1872.

To all'whom it may concern.'

Be it known that I, AUeUsrUs ScnnLLiNe, of Erie, county of Erie, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Dusting-Brushes, of which the following is coaches, and for other similar purposes, with,

as yet, but indifferent success, owing to the difticultyin finding material havin ga sufficient degree of strength to insure durability, and of elasticity to retain its shape, and which is at the same time cheap enough to warrant i-ts employment for this purpose; all of the above conditions being required to be met in any brush which can be advantageously manufactured and sold.

In order to meet the above-recited requirements, I have made this invention, which consists in producing, as a new article of manufacture, a horse-hair duster, which I will now proceed to describe.

In the drawing, Arepresents the head, formed of wood in cylindrical form, and usually made in one piece with the handle A. brush-block. It is provided with a number of perforations, b, arranged generally in circular lines, which are concentric with its circumference. These holes are bored at right angles to the face of the block, but incline outwardly in order to give the desired conforma-tion to B is the' the body of the brush, as will be readily seen from the drawing. The hair is drawn into the holes b, and firmly secured therein by means of a wire or wires, bf, so that there is little or no possibility of its escape; and in addition to the wires I usually employ pitch, or its equivalent, to still further secure the hair. The block is fastened to the head.

I have found by continued use that, in addition to greater durability, ahorse-hair duster is superior toa featherlduster, because it retains the same ineness of texture until it is entirely worn out; whereas, when feathers are employed the vanes will, of course, wear off first, leaving the bare quills, and soon rendering the duster practically worthless.

I am aware that Tampico sea-grass and siln ilar materials have been used for dusters, but, owing to a lack of elasticity to this class of ber, dusters made from it soon lose their shape land become spread and straggled to such an extent as to render them practically inoperative.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

As a new articlevof manufacture, the hereindescribed dust-brush, composed of hair drawn in and afiixcd to the perforated head B by means of wire or other strong and suitable material, and attached to the handle A A', the Whole made in the form of a feather-duster, as described and shown.
