PADLOCK.
Specicaton of Letters Patent. Patented NOV. 13, 1917.
Application filed March 10, 1914. Serial No. 823,702. n'
To @ZZ ywhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES F. LEMON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Padlock, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object a padlock which is particularly simple in construction, economical in manufacture and highly eti'icient and durable in use.
In describing this invention, reference is had to the accompanying drawings, in which like characters designate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a fronty elevation of the padlock, the shackle being Vshown as swung out of its operative position. Y
Fig. 2 is an elevation thereof, the front plate or section of the body of the padlock being removed.
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 with the front plate of the locking mechanism removed, and the locking members in their` position assumed when locking the shackle.
Fig. 4 is a cross-sectional View on line .rk-A, Fig. 1.
This padlock comprises, generally, a body, a shackle, and locking mechanism including parts for coacting with both arms of the shackle.
1 designates the body, and 2 the shackle, the body having a central cavity and being composed of front and rear plates or sections, which are substantial duplicates of each other and are shaped to inclose the central cavity or chamber in which the locking mechanism is located, and to form a pair of upwardly extending necks 3 in which the opposing arms 4, of the shackle 2 slide. As illustrated, each of the opposing plates or sections composing the body l, is formed with a depressed central panel and a circumferential marginal flange extending outwardly from the panel and then inwardly toward tne opposite plate or resection, said flanges having their edges in Contact. A
Preferably, the lower ends of the opposing sides of the arms et, 5, of the shackle are provided with engaging means which are movable into and outpof the central cavity of the body 1, when carried by said ends into and out of engagement 'with the locking mechanism.
6 is a carrier slidable in the body 1', and to the upper end of which the arm 5 of the shackle Qis swiveled, the carrier 6 being formed vwith a lengthwisecavity or passage, and the arm 5 of the shackle having an axial stem 7 at its end, the stem being provided with a head 8 which constitutes va swivel head.` The stem and head extend into the passage of the carrier 6 and the carrier is formed with indentations 9 pressed inwardly to contract the passage of the carrier and form shoulders for engaging the upper side of the head 8, thus coupling the carrier to the shackle. The carrier pressed upwardly by a spring 10 Vlocated within the same and bearing against the head 8. The spring is supported, and the carrier guidedv as will be hereinafter eX- plained.
The locking mechanism includestwo sets of locking members interlocking respectively with the engaging means of the op-` posing arms 4, 5 of the shackle 2 to prevent withdrawal of the hasp from the body, one set being operable by a key, and the other set being operated by the key-.operated set. 11, 12 are the sets of locking members, the menibers of each set being arranged one in ad- Vance of the other and the members of oneY set being paired with those of the other. Said locking members 11,12 are pivoted at 13, 14 between their ends, and have hooks or engaging heads 157 16 at their upper ends which are disposed between the arms 4, 5, of the shackle when inits depressed posi` tion and take into the corresponding engaging means or notches 17, 18 of the opisV posing sides of said arms 4, 5. Each locking f member 11 is provided with an arm or tail 19 extending below its pivot and having la key-engaging face designed to be engaged by the bit of a key insertible through the keyhole 20. Preferably, the key-engaging ,Y
face of one locking member 11 is'routof alinement with the keyeengaging faces of theother locking members, as shown in Fig. 3. The arms or tails 19 constitute the key operated tumblersV of the padlock, and, consequently, the members 11 of the padlock are combined locking members and tumblers.
Each member 12 is operated out of opera*- tive position by one tumbler or locking member 11 which is provided with -an -a-rm 21 exten-ding Vata right-angle to its arm-11 and hook larm 15, and co-acting with the tail or arm 22 of said member 12 below its pivot 14, the tail 22 having an inclined surface '23 with which the end or' the arm 21 coacts to cam the member 12 ont vor operative position as the tumbler or locking member 11 is moved by the key out of operative position. i Each pair of locking members 11 and l2 is moved into `operative position by a spri-ng 24 interposed between said locking members 11 and 12 and acting on their upper ends in opposite directions, this spring also permitting the locking members 11 and 12 to yield independently and being substantially V 'shape and having the ends of its branches located'in notches 25 on opposing sides or the locking members 11 and 12. The upper sides or the notches 17 and 18 and the heads 15, 16 are shaped to cause the locking members 11, l12 to move against the action of the springs 24 when vthe shackle is being'moved downwardly into locking position. There is aspiring for each pair of members 11, 12.
The lccking'mechanism further includes front and rear plates 26, 2T which support the locking parts 11, 12 and the shackle carrier 6, the plates being located contiguous to the front and rear sides of the body 1, and connected together and spaced apart bythe pivots 13, l-l and by additional pins or rivets 28 Whichalso extend through the front and rear sides of the body 1 and serve to secure together 'the plates Yforming the body. One of the plates, as the rear plate 27, is formed with a vertical marginal flange or lug 29 bent at a right angle thereto for ngaging one or the si'desiof the carrier 6, and the front plate 26 is formed with a lug 3o bent at an oblique angle thereto and engaging an obliquely arranged sidel on the carrier 6, the lange2`9 and lug 30 forming a lguide for the carrier. The carrier is also guided by the neck 3 and by guidiiig faces provided 'on the locking members 12 an'd'opp'csed to, and spaced apart from, the [ian'ge 29 andthe lug 30. rlhe lug 30 also acts as a stop o1`li`i`niting the throw or the carrier 6, theV stop engaging thesurfaces at opposite 'ends or said inclined face 3l or the carrier.
@ne of the plates, as the rearplate 27, is also provided with a lug 83 bent 'at a 'right angle thereto and facing 'upwardly andarranged'toiorm an abutment Jfor the carrier 6 anda lseat forthe spring 1:0, the 'lug' 33 y having an upwardly extending` projection o'r pi'n Bi normally extending into the carrier 6 andlprev'entmg the springl() from displacement. The lower end 'of the spring e'narms 19 of the tumblers 11 and moves said t-umbl-ers to carry their-heads v15 out or interlocking engagement With the arm i of the shackle and at the same time, the arms 21 for the tumblers 11 operate the locking members 12 to Withdraw their heads 16 out of le'n;gaIgemC-lnt with the arm 5 of the shackle, whereupon thelspring 10 shirts the carrier 6 and 't'he'sh'ac'kle upwardly until the swivel joint is located outside or' the body, after which the shackle Acan be opened or swung in any direction and in a complete circle it desired. :To lock the device, the shackle is thrown into 'the position sho'vvn in Fig. pressed inwardly and the arms el. 5 the engage'ivith theV heads 15, '16 of the licking members. The necks 3 are non-circular Iand the 'arms 4l, 5 of the shackle vslirhibly lit the same so that-the shackle cannot si el luntil the upper end'of the carrier mores above the neck 3 in which it slides.
'1` his lock is particularly (advantageous in that the shackle is locked at both ends ther of,'and further in thatth'e locking mechanism consists of a small number or compa'ctly-arra'nged and easily-made parts.
