A spring arm 15 projects within the elongated opening 14 and bears against one side of the shaft 3. The arm 13 carries a lug 16 adapted to engage in any one of the series of recesses or notches 12 The stop arm 1?} may he shifted in a radial direction against the tension of the spring arm 15 such movement being permitted by the elongated opening 14. By the radial movement of the stop arm 18 the lug 16 will be disengaged from the notch or recess 12- Whereupon the stop arm may be revo lubly adjusted to diiterent radial positions and engaged in a diii'erent notch or recess 12.
Projecting from the rear Wall or the housing or casing 1 is a stop post 17 adapted to be engaged by the stop arms 13 to limit the rotation of permutation disks 4 in one direction The stop post 17 determines the initial or starting point for the operation of the disks in working the combination.
As shown in Fig. 2 the successive disks upon the main shaft 3 are cut away to expose the notched or recessed periphery of the disk below. The notches or recesses of the disks are numbered from 1 to 9. By cutting the successive disks away whereby the lower disks will project beyond the uppermost visible enabling the operator to more read ily adjust the stop arm 13 to the desired position upon the disk. In addition to the notches or recesses 12 each of the permuta tion disks or tumblers 4 are provided with a deep notch 18. The locking bolt 5 is adapted to be released when the several permutation disks have been rotated to bring their notches 18 to a predetermined position and in alinement one with the other.

Inasmuch as the spring 25 is of greater strength than the spring 22 the finger 26 carried by the trip arm 23 and engaging the pin 27 will cause the pawl arm 20 to' be withdrawn from the notch 21 of the bolt 5, against the tension of the spring: 22- when the stud 24 of the trip arm falls into the recesses 18. The bolt 5 will thus he released-and then may be reciprocated within the casing 2 by means of the knob or handle from the stem of which projects an arm 29 engaging a stud 30, projecting laterally from the bolt 5.
ProJec-ting longitudinally from the inner extremity of the bolt is a pin 31. Revolubiy mounted upon the main shaft 3 in a common plane with the pin 31. and adjacent to one of the permutation disks 4 is a throw-- out disk 32 adapted by its operation to dis engage the stud 24 of the trip arm 23 from the notches 18 to release the permutation disks and permit their return to normal position and at the same time to release the pawl arm 20 to permit its return to engagement with the bolt under the influence of the spring 22. Successive steps in the operation of the throw-out disk are illustrated in Figs. 8, 9, 10 and 11. The throw-out disk 32 being mounted upon the main shaft 3 adjacent to the permutation disks 1 is provided with an arcuate slot 33 engaged by a stud 34 projectint, from the adjacent permutation disk 1 or preferably from the ratchet disk 6. The ar'cuate slot will permit the throw-out disk 32 a limited revoluble movement independent of the permutation disk. This independent movement of the throw-out disk is preferably made equal to one advance step of the permutation mechanism. In the periphery of the throwout disk 32 there is pro- I vided a notch or recess 35 movable into and out of registry with the corresponding notch 18 of the permutation disk by the independent movement of the throw-out disk.

The construction is such that the cylinder may be rotated only after the detent 51 has been oscillated out of engagement with the rec 52. To oscillate the detent 51 there is provided within the locking bolt 5 a spring pressed depressible pawl 53. The detent 1 is provided with a laterally projecting lip .34 extending into the path of the pawl .1; carried by the b lt. As the bolt 5 is reciprocattul inward t its unlocked or imperative position by the rotation of the kn b 28 the pawl 53 will engage the lip it of the detent 5t and will oscillate the detent 51 out of its engagement with the rev olnble cylinder ti thereby pern'iitting the cylinder to be rotated to withdraw the lug .30 from the plate 45. Thus it will be seen that in order to remove the cover from the housing it is necessary to operate the combination of the permutation mechanism and then reciprocate the bolt 5 until the pawl engages and oscillates the detent 51 out of engagement with the revoluble cylinder 47. while the detcnt' is thus held out of engagement the cylinder may be rotated by means of a key to withdraw the lug 50 from its engagen'ient with the plate 44.
From the above description it will be a'pparent that there is thus produced a device of the character described, pos essing the particular features cl" advantage before enumerated as desirable. but which obviously is susceptible of modification in its form, proportion, detail construction, and arrangement of parts. without departing from the principle involved or sacrificing any of its advantages.
While in order to comply with the statute, the invention has been herein described in language more or l ss specific as to certain structural tcatur s, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to any speci ic details, but that the means and mechanism herein shown and described comprise but one mode of putting the invention into etlect and the invention is therefore claimed broadly in any of its possible forms or modi tications within the scope of the appended claims.
