Description

UNITED STAES HENRY LOEWENBERG, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN FABRICS FOR HEAD-COVERINGS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY LOEWENBERG,
of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Head-Coverings; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a head-covering made of a body of Willow or other wood braiding, coated with paint or varnish on one or both sides, and pressed with suitable dies in imitation of straw-braiding or other goods in such a manner that the article produced is capable of resisting the action of moisture; that it retains its shape in any weather to which it may be exposed; and furthermore, the article thus prepared is of superior durability, cheapness, and lightness.
In'carrying out my invention, I take braiding of willow or other wood, an article which is sold in the market and has been used extensively for bonnets or other head-covering. Of this willow or other wood braiding I take one or more layers and shape the same; then coat them on one or both sides with paint or varnish, by preference prepared of linseed-oil and the requisite coloring matter; and then I press the same with suitable dies to produce the required surface, such as imitation strawbraiding, felt, or other costly material.
By using willow or other wood braiding for the body of my head-covering I am enabled to produce a superior article at a reduced cost. Willow-braiding'is less costly than buckrain, generally used for the body of imitation bonnets; furthermore, the willow-braiding is capable of resisting the action of the moisture, and when coated with paint or varnish and pressed it is impervious to water, and can be exposed to the most severe weather without losing its shape. My head-covering is cheap, light, and durable.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A head-covering, made of a body of willow or other wood braiding, treated with paint or varnish, and pressed, substantially as herein described.
HENRY LOEWENBERG.
