EMIL NEUFELDT, or BROMIBERG, cramp.
ranss roa BEET-ROOT currmcs, BAGASSE, AND THE LIKE.
Application filed March 4, 1914. Serial No. 822,431.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMIL NEUFELDT, a citizen of the German Empire, residing at Bromberg, in the German Empire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Presses for Beet-Root Cuttings, Bagasse, and the like, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to presses for beetroot cuttings, bagasse and the like.
Known presses for removing liquid from beet-root cuttings, bagasse and similar disintegrated vegetable produce comprise a rotatable spindle provided with helically formed blades and surrounded by a jacket or casing. At the lower end of the press the spindle is arranged nearer to the jacket in order that the gap for allowing egress of the cuttings or the like may be a narrow one. On thesize of this gap depends, other conditions being equal, the extent to which the cuttings will be deprived of their liquid under the pressure applied. In order to be able to vary the size of this gap or lower opening of the press, a cylindrical or conical member is adjustably mounted at. the lower end of the press. a
A primary object of my invention is to press of this kind, improved for adjusting the said cylindrical or To this end I guide the said member vertically on the frame of the 1press and I' make the position of said memmeans er-capable of absolute regulation by means of a self-locking or self-retaining gear of such a gear-ratio that the said member can be adjusted by one -man during the working of the press.
One illustrative embodiment of my invention is represented by way of example in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is an elevation of the press, partly in vertical section, and
Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on the line B in Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawing the spindle a of the press is journaled in bearings b, a above and below the frame (2 respectively, and is surrounded by the strainer-jacket 6 through which the liquid flows which is The jacket e is surrounded by an outer jacket f. The spindle a carries a number of helically formed blades 9. Each pitch of the screw- Speciflcation of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 6, 1917.
like body so formed contains four blades, which are separated one from another by intervening spaces. Through these spaces pass the projecting stops it, which are fast on the outer sheet-metal jacket 7.
The spindle is driven by a belt pulley 2' through the intermediary of gears k, l.
ereas the lower portion m of the straining jacket tapers downwardly, the lower portion at of the spindle is cylindrical. On this portion 1a. is mounted a vertically slidable conical member 0. The member 0 is carried by a hub 72 which is vertically guided on the tube-like portion 9 of the frame (1 of the press. A feather r on the said tube-like portion 9 and a groove formed in the hub p and fitting this feather prevent the member 0 from sharing the motion of the spindle a. In order to adjust the conical member 0 vertically, this member carries two racks 8 Which mesh with two gears t journaled in the frame. These gears are fast on axles journaled in stationary portions of the frame, on which axles are also rigidly mounted the Worm-Wheelslu. The latter mesh with worms 1'; which are fast on a common axle w, and of'which the one is right-handed and the other left-handed. The worm gears u, e have such a high gearratio that they act as retaining devices, 2'. 0. they cannot be actuated by a turning moment applied to the gears 25. With the axle w which is journaled in the frame of the press is rigidly connected a hand-crank w.
en it is desired to vary the lower opening or mouth of the press, the conical member o is adjusted in height and depth by retating the hand-crank m. In that manner this opening may be widened or narrowed.
The stop action or retaining action of the worm gears u, o prevents the member 0 from being lowered unintentionally owing to the pressure in the press. The feather r prevents the member 0 from being driven by the spindle a when the latter rotates' The member 0 may also be of cylindrical form and be arranged to slide up and down as desired either adjacently to the spindle a or to the straining jacket. From the foregoing disclosure of construction and arrangement, it will be seen that the member 0 controlling the lower opening or mouth of the. press can be readily and quickly adusted without previously being required to p untighten or loosen up bolts or other accessories, and all said adjustments can be ef= fected without stopping the operation of the press, when it can be determined by watching the egress of the material during the running of the ress, whether the material is progressing e, ciently through the press and the operations are satisfactory.
I claim l. The combination. in a press for beet-root cuttings, bagasse and the like provided with an annular discharge outlet for the solid matter having an annular member adjustable to varythe cross section of said discharge outlet while the press is in operation, of means for adjusting and varying the position and locking said annular member in the annular outlet comprising racks secured to said annular member, gears meshing with said racks and operating and locking worms engaging with said gears.
2. The combination in a press for beet-root cuttings, bagasse and the like provided with an annular discharge outlet for the solid matter having an annular member vertically naaaeso adjustable to vary the cross section of said discharge outlet while the press is in opera-. tion, of means for raising, lowering and locking said annular member in the annular outlet comprising vertical racks secured to and oppositely disposed on said annular matter having a non-rotatable annular member vertically adjustable to vary the cross section of said discharge outlet while the press is in operation, of'ineans for raising, lowering and locking said annular member in the annular outlet comprising vertical racks secured to said annular member, a gear meshing with each of said racks and operating and locking worms engaging with said gears lln testimony whereof l have afixe'd my signature.
