To all whom it may concern: V I
Be it known that I, ROBERT N. ALLEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Methuen, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Shuttles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in shuttles, and the primary object of the inventionis to provide a shuttlewhich has means for automatically positioning the bobbin on the shuttle spindle, so that the bobbin, when empty, will be in position to enable the shuttle to be discharged from the machine by the device employed for this purpose.
In automatic looms a feeler is operated at a predetermined time to pass through the shuttle and through the side of the bobbin in case there is no yarn on the bobbin, so that when the yarn runs out or is exhausted, and the bobbin thus is fully, if not practically empty, an automatic device will be set in motion to discharge the shuttle carrying the empty bobbin.
The present invention therefore aims to accurately insure proper positioning of the bobbin on the shuttle spindle for the purpose above set forth and regardless of how the bobbin is applied to the shuttle spindle.

The shuttle S is provided with the side opening 1 and the bobbin with a side opening which extends through each of the 0pposite sides of the bobbin B as indicated at 2-2.
The invention embodies an aliner which consists of a substantially U-shaped plate like member 3 preferably provided with a collar 4 enlarged at its outer end at 5, and secured to the center of the member 3, between the wings or arms 6 of said member; a hole 7 being formed through the member 3 in register with the bore of the collar. In this hole and the collar bore, the spindle .P
of the shuttle is received whereupon the aliner is brazed or otherwise rigidly secured to the spindle;
The aliner is secured to the spindle so that its wings 6 extend vertically when the spindle is in horizontal position. The spindle of the shuttle thus carries the alincr with it in all movements of the spindle, the latter being pivoted for movement out of the shuttle. The bobbin has a head 8 formed with opposite flat parallel side portions 99 of a distance apart so as to be received between the wings 6-6 and engaged by the latter to hold the bobbin in the position of Fig. 2, where its opening registers with the opening 1, in the shuttle side. From the foregoing it will be apparent that regardless of whether the bobbin is placed on the Spindle in any position, whatsoever, it is necessary to turn same to bring its flat side parts in register with the wings 6, so as to move said fiat sides into the space between the wings in the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and when in such position, openings 1 and 2 register.
The opening 2 of the bobbin is in the same plane with the flat Sides of the shuttle opening 1, consequently, when the bobbin is properly positioned by reason of the head 8 of the bobbin being held by the wings 6-6 of the aliner, the register between openings 1 and 2 will be effected.
With the aforementioned register effected, it will be now apparent, that the feeler, can upon complete or partial exhaustion of the yarn on the bobbin to expose opening 2 thereof, pass through opening 1 of the shuttle, and approach the spindle to thereby set in operation the automatic shuttle ejecting means above referred to. Thus coincidence of the slots 1 and 2 is requisite and is positively provided for by the present invention.
The aliner prevents rotation of the bobbin on the spindle and is prevented from movinglongitudinally of the spindle by the usual grips G carried by the shuttle.
In some cases, the enlargement 5 of the collar 4 may be completely omitted from the aliner, if desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 1. In a shuttle having a side opening, and
a spindle, formed in one osition thereof to have its opening register with the shuttle opening, an aliner on the spindle having a collar and a U-shaped member perforated to register with the collar bore and having the collar secured to the center of its base, and a headon the bobbin formed with oppositely disposed flat side faces engageable between the wings of the Umember.
2. In a shuttle having a side opening, a bobbin receivable over the shuttle spindle and having an opening for register with the shuttle opening, a U-shaped aliner secured to the shuttle spindle, and a bobbin having opposite flat side faces receivable from either end of said faces between the wings of the aliner to beheld with its opening in register with the shuttle opening.
