IMPROVEMENT IN WASHING-MACHINES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 124,548, dated March 12, 1872.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JAMES E. CoNNoLLY, of Dublin, in the county ot' Harford and State of Maryland, have invented a new and Improved Washing-Machine; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact de scription of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section, and Fig. 2 is a top view. y

This invention relates to a machine for washing clothes, in which there is an upper and a lower rubber, these vibrating in opposite direcv.tions and holdin g the clothes between them, the

lower rubber being provided with cloth-naps at its ends, and the upper rubber being provided with means for attaching and detaching said laps, the latter serving to retain the clothes between the rubbers While Washing.

Referring to the dra-win g, a c are the transverse slats of the upper rubber, said slats being spiral in form and attached at their ends to side pieces b b', thefpieces b being jointed to the extremities of the pieces b. A lever, g, mounted on a pivot secured tothe inside of one end of the box A, is jointed at its lower extremity to the end roller d of the lower rubber, and is connected by a bar, h, with a slotted block, i, secured to the top of the upper rubber. Hence, the oscillation of the lever g vibrates the two rubbers in opposite directions. Such oscillation is effected by means of a handle, t', inserted in a socket, j, in the lever g. Each lever g is provided with two sockets, j, one continuous with the lever and the other at right angles to it, in either of which the handle z' can be placed as may be most convenient. Standards 7c extend from the top of the upper rubber, two at .each side, which Vare connected in pairs by means of transverse bars l, two to each pair ot' standards. Flat strips m pass between the bars l lengthwise of the box A, the extremities of said strips being grooved so that the strips can be slipped between uprights n, two at each end of the box A. Springs o, surround ing said uprights and kept in place by pinsfp, press down on the strips m and cause them to keep the upper rubber bearing with force on the clothes.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, s-

1. The upper rubber provided with hinged ends and buttons c c', in combination with the lower rubber a-nd flaps e, as specified.
