\ WWNESSES,
UNITED STATES PATENT @Triton f NELSON C. BURNAP, OF ARGUSVILLE, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN MEANS FOR SECURING COVERS OF MILKCANS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 124,539, dated March 12, 1872.
To'all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NELSON C. BURNAP, of Argusville, in the county of Schoharie and State of New York, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Milk-Gans; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the saine, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification, and to the letters and igures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l ofthe drawingis a representation ,of a side view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical cross'section of the saine.
This invention has relation to milk-cans, and has for its object the rendering of the cans secure against being opened surreptitionsly during its transportation from place to place. The novelty of this invention7 therefore, consists in the peculiar construction of the lid of a milk-can, and of the can-body and its attachments, as hereinafter described, whereby provision :is made for the application ot a padlock as an effectual fastening.
In the accompanying drawing, A represents the body of a milk-can, which is ttted by a anged sliding cover, B, which rests on the shoulder C. In one side of the ange or rim D ofthe cover an L-shaped slot, d, is cut, its
' open end being the lower end of its vertical section, beginning at the lower edge of said rim. A stud, d1, projecting from the upper the lid is put on. In the opposite of the rim D a slot, cl2, is out, and is adapted to receive a loop, e, formed on a spring-plate, E, which is secured to the inner surface of the can. This loop and the stud d1, together, prevent the raising ofthe cover until the latter be turned so as to bring the vertical section of the slot d to the stud d1. The side of the loop eis beveled, so that as the cover is turned the edge of the slot d2 will force it back out of the way. The loop springs out to fill the slot whenever the latter covers it, an opening, f, for it being made in the can. A wall, g, incloses the spring E, and prevents the leakage ot' the can through the aperture f. To secure the cover to the can so as to prevent the stealing of milk a padlock, F, is applied to the loop e, as shown in Fig. 2. Gr designates a rubber band surrounding the sea-1n between the cover and the shoulder G, and serving to render the can air-tight.
I claim as my invention- The combination of the can A, having the partition g, spring-latch E, and stud d1, with the cover B, having the slots d d2, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my naine in the presence i of two witnesses.
NELSON C. BURNAP.
