HANNAH JACOBS & HARRY JACOBS..
HAIR WAVING AND DRYING APPARATUS.

UNMED srrcrns rarmar ora ion,
HANNAH JACOBS AND HARRY JACOBS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
HAIR WAVING AND DRYING APPARATUS.
Application filed December 14, 1916.
T0 aZZ whom it may concern Be it known that we, HANNAH Jaoons and HARRY James, citizens of the United States, and residents of New York, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hair Waving and Drying Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in hair waving and drying apparatus in which the hair is moistened, wound upon a stem and dried in a drying chamber or compartment.
Numerous devices of said character have been manufactured but none of them employ the method for drying the hair that is embodied in our invention.
VVit-h the devices now in use a very long time is consumed in drying the hair upon the stem. The subject generally setting from two to four hours depending upon the amount or quantity of hair waved at an operation.
It is to reduce this operating time to a minimum that we have devised our apparatus.
We accomplish this object by providing a device by the use of which hot air is forced, under pressure, through the drying chamber of the apparatus, around the moistened hair which is wound upon the stem. The forced hot-draft speeds the drying process considerably and reduces the time of sitting.
In the drawings which illustrate our improvement Figure 1 is a view, partly in section, of the distributing drum or head attached to an air heating and driving element; Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the drying member, engaging a stem with hair wound upon it and which is connected, by means of a flexible tube, to the distributing head or drum hereinafter fully described; Fig. 3 is an end view of a split head which engages in one end of the drying member; Fig. 4c is a similar view but showing the two parts separated; Fig. 5 is a side view of said head and Figs. 6 and 7 are enlarged detail views which will be hereinafter fully described.
Figs. 2, 3, 4L andb are approximately full size. Similar reference numerals refer to similar parts throughout.
The apparatus comprises essentially the drying member illustrated in Fig. 2 which Specification of Letters Patent.

is formed of a tube 1 having an external thread 2 at one end and an internal thread 8 at its opposite end. ii split head consisting of the parts 4t and 5 and threaded at one end 6 is adapted to engage in the threaded portion 8 of the tube 1 as indicated. The said head is provided with one or more outlet passages 7 and a central perforation 8 through which a winding stem 9, com monly called a piping stem, is adapted to engage.
A flexible tube 10 having a threaded portion 11 is adapted to engage upon the threaded end 2 of the drying member 1 and affords a means of directing or supplying hot air from the distributing drum or head 19 to which it is connected as at 13.
The said distributing head 12 is provided with a plurality of outlets 14 which are adapted to be connected to one or more drying members 1 as indicated and described. The various outlets 14 which are not in use may be closed by means of suitable caps 15 and washers 16.
The air is led to the distributing head from its source by means of the main or conductor 17 which is connected to any suitable heating element 18 and any suitable (The location and arrangement of the air heating and driving mechanism 18 and 19 is diagrammatical and is not shown in detail as any suitable means for heating and driving the air may be employed.)
The winding or piping stem 9 to be used in conjunction with our device may consist of a hollow, slightly tapered perforated metal tube and a funnel shaped end piece 20 adapted to engage upon the end of the iping stem 9 as indicated in Figs. 2, 6 and g The end piece 20 is further formed with prongs or centering legs 21 whose function is obvious; while the form of piping stem shown in the drawings may be used in conjunction with our device it is not essential, to the proper working of the apparatus, that a piping stem of this particular con struction be employed asany piping stem whether hollow, with or without perforations, or solid may be used with equal success.
One part 4 of the split head, hereinbefore described is provided with dowels 22 which engage in corresponding holes 23 in the part 5 and act to hold the two parts of the split head together in proper alinement.
In operation, the hair, having been moistened, is wound upon the stem 9 and held thereon at one end by means of the split head parts 4 and 5 and at the other end by means of athread or suitable band. The drying member 1 having been connected to the distributing drum 12 by means of the flexible tube 10, the stem 9 is inserted within the drying member 1 and the split head screwed tightly in place; the funnel shaped end piece 20 is placed upon the end of stem 9 before same is inserted within the drying member. The air driving and heating mechanism is then set in motion and causes a hot current of air to pass rapidly through the drying chamber to dry the hair.
The distributing drum is preferably located above the head of the person being operated upon when said person is seated in the operating chair and may be suspended or held in that position by any approved means. A regulation hair drying device such as are commonly used in hair dressing emporiums may be used in connection with our device. The air heating element may be located within the drum and the air driving mechanism may be located at a distance therefrom or both may be located within the drum and the heating means may be of any approved method, electric or otherwise.
The drying member and the split head and its parts are preferably made of heat insulating material.
It is obvious that we may embody various modifications to our device without departing from the spirit of our invention, we do not therefore wish to limit ourselves to the particular construction shown.
That we do claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a hair drying and waving apparatus, a drying chamber open at both ends and adapted to inclose a winding stem having hair wound thereon and means for causin a current of heated air to pass the said drying chamber.
5; through wearer 2. In a hair drying and waving apparatus, a drying chamber having inlet and outlet passages and adapted to engage a wind ing stem having hair wound thereon and means for forcing heated air under pressure through the said drying chamber.
3. In a hair drying and waving apparatus, an elongated drying member open at both ends, a hollow, perforated, winding stem adapted to engage within said drying member and means for rapidly driving hot air through the said drying member.
4. In a hair drying and waving apparatus, an elongated drying member open at both ends, a hollow, perforated, winding stem adapted to engage within said drying member, a split member engaging upon one end of, the said drying member and adapted to hold the winding stem with the hair upon it within the said drying member, and means for rapidly driving hot air through the said drying member.
5. In a hair drying and waving apparatus, an elongated drying member open at both ends, a hollow, perforated, winding stem adapted to engage within said drying member, a funnel shaped member attached to the inner end of said winding stem and adapted to lead the hot air into the said winding stem, and means for rapidly driving hot air through the drying member.
6. In a hair drying and waving aparatus, an elongated drying member open at both ends, a hollow, perforated winding stem adapted to engage within said drying member, means for centering the inner end of said winding stem within the said drying member, and means for rapidly driving hot air through the drying member.
Signed at New York, in the county of Kings and State of New York, this 13th day of December, A. D. 1916.
