Be it. known that I, HENRY Hoon, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and.
useful Improvements in Screw-Drivers, of which the following is a speciication.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in screw drivers, and has for itsiobject to provide an exceedingly simple and effective device of this character, in which the shank of the blade passes entirely through the handle, thereby making a more rigid tool, giving a, more even balance to the same, and reducing to a minimum the likelihood of the handle become loose on the blade or the shank thereof.
A further object of the invention is to provide a ferrule at each end of the handle for rigidly securing said handle to the blade shank.
Another object of the invention is to provide a tool handle through which the tool shank passes, said handle being secured at each end to the shank in a unique manner, without rivets passing through the handle, so that should said handle split from any cause whatsoever, it will be practically impossible to separate the handle from the tool shank.
With these ends in view, this invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth and then specifically designated by the claim.
In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains, may understand how to make and use the same, I will describe its construction in detail, referring by numerals to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this application, in which- Figure l, is a side elevation of a screw driver in accordance with my improvement.

Fig. 4, is a section at the line 4--4 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 5, is a similar view of the inner ferrule.
In carrying out my invention as here embodied, 2 represents a tool blade provided with a shank 3 on which is mounted the handle 4 of wood or other suitable material having a central bore 5 running entirely therethrough for the insertion of the shank 3. The ends of the handle 4 are so formed as to produce truste-conical extensions 6, the bases or i larger portions of which are slightly smaller than the outer circumference of the handle to form shoulders 7. On the inner end of the handle is mounted an inner ferrule 8 having a bore 9 which begins to flare outward and upward from a point intermediate the ends of the ferrule to produce a frusto-conical chamber l0, and the inner walls of the ferrule in the region of the frusto-conical chamber are serrated as at 11. These serrations, when the ferrule is driven on the inner end of the handle, embed themselves in the frusto-conical extension 6 at the inner end of the handle, and prevent the ferrule and handle rotating independent of each other, and this ferrule is rigidly fastened to the shank of the tool lblade by a. rivet l2 which passes entirely through the ferrule and shank.
On the outer end of the handle is mounted an outer ferrule 13 having a central bore 14, which iiares outward from a point intermediate its ends to produce a frusto-coni cal chamber 15, the walls of which are serrated as at 16 and these serrations are adapted to embed themselves in the frusto-conical extension 6 at the outer end of the handle when the outer ferrule is driven home, and when properly positioned, the end of the shank is headed as at 17. When the ferrules are placed upon the handle, the inner edges engage the shoulders 7 on the handle and properly position the ferrules relative to the handle.
The rivet l2 and the heading of the shank 17 securely fasten the ferrules to the shank, and said ferrules having their serrations em` bedded in portions of the handle, rigidly fasten all parts together and prevent the landle from turning independently of the lade.
By making a. screw driver with the shank passing entirely through the handle, there is very little likelihood of the handle ever splitting, but as the same cannot turn independently of the blade, a better purchase can be obtained upon the work.
Of course, I do not wish to be limited to the exact details of construction as here shown, as these may be varied Within the limits of the appended eleiniwltliout departing from the Spirit ofiny invention;
