Description
UNI STATES EN FF I How-AIR rummcm Specification of Letters fatent No 1 To all wheat mayroficera:
S. G: SrENoE, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have inventeda new and useful Improvement in Hot-Air Furnaces;
andI ddherebyj declare that the same is fully described andrepresented in the fol- 5 lowingspecification andthe accompanying drawlngs, figures letters and. ;references i thereof. 1 v
Of the said drawings,lFigure;l, represents central and vertical section of my improved hot,air furnace.X Fig. 2, is an 6X1 ,ternal elevationoffthe "radiator and fire place or fuel chahibera r In Fig.1, A notes the ash B, the
I fire pot,-andD,j he fireplace, space, or chamber directly; over. theffirepot and for the reception of flame and the volatile products of combustionthat arise from the fuel. v E, is themouth or charging tube of the v .yfireplace, Fbeing thejidoor thereof.
Out of the top oftheichamber D, a series of. vertical pipes G, G, G, arranged inxa circle are madetoqlead Land to carry the volatile products of combustion directly into alchamber orgcylindricalbox H, arranged over the fireplace D, as seen in thed'rawingss Outof the topofthe chamber H, a
discharging pipelI isled for the purpose of conveying smoke fromsaid chamber'H, into i the atmosphere or into a chimney or dis- 'flcold air chamber N, N, of the: furnace. Fromthe middle of the bottom ofjthe radiating chamber H, a pipe or flue, O, is made to lead out of,and down and through the charge pipe. Thej saidpipe -I, is provided fwithadamperc K, whose rod L is made to extend through the front casing M, of the the fire chamber or fireplace and over the fire pot B, and out ofthe the chamber and into y the pipe I, above thedamper as seen in Fig.
I 1.1 This pipe, 0, isprovided with a partihtion, Q, extending across it just above the fireplace or flamejfchamber, D, and such I partition has made through it a perforation or orifice R ofasizejustor about sufiicient to keepl up fthe draft and carry ofl thenoncombustible properties of the smoke or volatile products fIof combustion.
. porifice "may have pipe S, extended ,from it andyback into the pipe 0, as seen: in the drawings, such pipe being This open at its rear: end so as toconduct the smoke to the orifice. The flue pipe, 0, around or below the pipe, S, and within the chamber, D, and over the fire place, isperforated with one or a series of holes as seen at T, T, the same beingfor the purpose of discharginginto the flame chamber, D, the combustible volatile products or gases that may descend the pipe, 0, the discharge of which is greatly facilited by the pipe, S, as in passing around the same, such pipe 0perates to prevent them from escaping through the orifice B. By discharging these combustible products into the fire place or.
flamechamber, they are inflamed and thereby much heat that would otherwise be lost by suffering them to flow directly into the pipe, I, will be saved. By opening the dam.-
.per, K, the direct passage of the volatile products of combustion into the pipe is secured, while their passage down the pipe, 0, will be prevented thereby.
My improved furnace in other respects may be said to be essentially like many others in'common use.
By carrying a discharge flue, 0, through the fire chamber, D, in the manner above stated, I am not only enabled to attain advantages as above specified, but to secure another, viz, that of improving the draft, and particularly directly after a fire is first made in the fire-place, a time when owing to the cool state of the radiator and its discharge flues'a downward draft is most likely to take place, and in consequence thereof,
more or less smoke is generally thrown out into the room, through the mouth of the fire-place.
I claim as my invention- 1. The carrying the smoke discharge flue of the fire chamber back through the fire chambersubstantially as specified whereby the draft of a long flue is promoted.
2. I also claim, carrying the smoke discharge flue ofthe fire chamber or radiator back through the fire chamber in combination with notonly providing it with one or more orifices for the discharge of the combustibleproperties or gases of the smoke into the fire-place, but with diminished opening or passage suflicientpnly to carry oil the noncombustible volatlle portions of the smoke. p
3. I also claim combining With the dis- In testimony whereof I have hereunto set charge pipe, 0, and the orifice, R, the pipe my signature this twenty fifth day of March to extend back into the discharge pipe, 0, A. D. 1854.
and with respect to the openings, T, T, as GEO. S. G. SPENCE. specified the same being to facilitate the WVitnesses:
passage of the combustible gases into the R. H. EDDY,
fire-place. F. P. HALE, Jr.
