IMPROVEMENT lN APPARATUS FOR SPONGING CLOTH.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 124,461, dated March 12, 1872.
To allwhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD UTLEY, of the city of Appleton, Outagamie county, Wisconsin, have invented an Apparatus for Moistening and Sponging Cloth for tailors use, of which the following is a specification:
The nature of my invention consists in the use of a perforated cylinder in connection with a vessel in which steam can be generated; and has for its object the preparation of an entire piece of cloth for cutting at one operation.
A is a perforated cylinder, which should be made of some material on which the action of water would not produce oxidation, and should be of sufficient thickness to sustain the Weight of a piece of cloth, and its length should be equal to the width of the widest piece of cloth to be used. B is a cap or sleeve fitting tightly over the upper end of the cylinder, so as to cover such portion of the cylinder as may not be covered by the cloth. (3 is a vessel, that may be made of any material that will sustain a small pressure of steam, and of any form or shape, so that it can be used upon a stove or furnace. D is a slide or valve covering the aperture or opening over which the cylinder is to be placed when in use for sponging the cloth. E is a valve, which is to be kept down by a light weight, which will be raised by a slight pressure of steam.
' Operation.
Partially fill the vessel 0 with water and place it upon or over a fire sufficient to cause the water to boil and produce steam. Wind the cloth (whether it be only for one garment or an entire piece) upon the cylinder and slide the sleeve or cap down until it meets the cloth; then wrap around the cloth to be sponged another cloth, for the purpose of keeping the at mosphere from the cloth to be sponged. Attach the cylinder to the steamer and draw the slide-valve; the steam will fill the cylinder and make its way through the cloth to the surface, thoroughly moistening the entire piece or roll of cloth.
What I claim as new, and Wish to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The adjustable sleeve B, when used in combination with the cylinder A, for the purposes set forth.
2. In a cloth-sponging apparatus, the com bination of cylinderA and sleeveB with steamgenerator 0 having slide-valve D and safetyvalve E, the several parts being constructed and arranged substantially as described, and for the purposes specified.
EDWARD UTLEY. In presence of-- HENRY D. RYAN, WARREN J. LANDER.
