DEFENSIVE IMPLEMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 23, 1917.
Application filed July 6, 1917. Serial No. 179,006.
mag t ed to such an extent as to divert as, 1011 as swords, guns, and the llke.
A further object is to provide such de vices in forms which may be readily moved from place to place or very easily and expeg ditiously inserted in the soil at desired:
points, the apparatus being relatively light and strong, and so arranged as to afford measurable protection to those defended by it.
These and other like objects are attained by the novel construction and combination of parts hereafter described and shown in the accompanying drawing, forming a mate rial part of this disclosure, and in which- Figure 1 is a front elevational View of a single abatis made in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is a side view of the same, and
Fig. 3 is a fragmental perspective view showing a modified form of construction.
The invention is comprised of a rigid base 10, having an open slot 11, and extending downwardly are a plurality of spurs 12, the same being sharply pointed and adapted to enter the ground so as to sustain. the parts attached to it.
Engaged in the slot 11 is a plate 14 pivoted on the pin 13 and having a plurality of holes 15, through which may be inserted a. pin 16 having ahead 17 the pin passing through similarly formed holes 17 in the base, thereby holding the plate stem 14 in an adjusted position.
Rigidly engaged with the stem is a rectangular frame 20 having an arcuate top, a similar frame 21 smaller in size being enframed therein, while a third frame 22 forms the center piece of the abatis. Rigidly secured to these several frames are oppositely disposed pairs of arms 24, 25 and 26 held by rivets 28.
A central vertical arm 27 is connected in a similar manner as can be seen best in Fig. 1, it being understood that the several arms 24,d25, 26 and 27 are each highly magnetize In operation, the several openings be tween the arms will allow space through which a gun of ordinary type may be inserted, the arms and frames affording protection to the party using the same, while the extended sharpened arm ends present obstacles to a party opposing and who may be obliged to climb over the same.
It is to be understood that this device may be equally used on land as well as on shipboard, and that the same may be set at a lateral angle with the base element if so desired.
In the modification shown in Fig. 3, a plurality of prongs 30 are secured by riveting to the bands 31, 32, and 33, the lower of which is closely adjacent to a fixed base 35, which may be moved along the surface of the ground or deck of a vessel, in an obvious manner, and which affords similar protection to the defenders.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a device of the class described, the combination with a base, means for engaging said base fixedly with a support, a frame hingedly engaged with said base, means for supporting said frame in a vertical or diagonal position, and a plurality of radiating arms rigidly engaged with said frame.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination with a base, and means for attaching said base to a foundation, of a sectional frame pivotally engaged with said base, a plurality of magnetized arms extending outwardly and upwardly from said frame and means for engaging said frame with said base in different angular relation.
In testimony whereof I have aflixed my signature.
J OZEF DARMOFALSKI.
