Description

Patented Feb. 2, 1926.
rarest. orifice.
CLARENCE L. DEWEY, OF ELKHART, INDIANA.
DECOY.
Application filed February 29, 1924.
T all 'whom- 'muy oonccrn Be it known that l, CLARENCE L. .DnwnrE a citizen of the United States. residing at Elkhart, in the county of Elkhart and State ot Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Decoys, oft' which the following` is a specification.
rlhe invention relates to improvements in decoys, and has especial reference to decoys for. enticing swimming birds on fowls.
One oit the objects of the invention is to provide a lifelike decoy when viewed from any angle above the decoy.
Another object is to cheapen the construction ot such devices and to arrange vthe parts thereof so that they may be packed in a relatively small compass.
A further object is to provide improved means i'or assembling the parts of the structure and for holding them together.
A. further object is to provide a base composed oi two members each of which is oi' substantially the same appearance and proi'ile as the vertically disposed member to be sup-ported thereon and therebetween.
rlhere are other objects and advantages which will readily appear iroin a consideration ot the Yfollowing` description when taken in conjunction with the drawing, wherein Fig. l shows a side elevation of the de rice simulating; 'the appearance ot a duck.
Fig. 2 a top plan View ot the device. Fig. 3 is the vertical profile plate.
l is a. horizontal profile buoyant platen made up of two parts oi" equal size.
l? 5 is a side view on line 5-5 of Fig. el.
in all ot the views the same reference characters are used to indicate corresponding` parts.
The decoy is made ot three major portions yihe base is provided by the buoyant members and 11, which may be of wood having,` a suitable water prooling` coating to prevent them from being water-logged. rlhese two members when oined together as shown in l have. the outline of a duck when viewed 'from above. They are painted to harmonize in color and character with the prolile member 12 which is to be imposed be- Selal No. 696,056.
tween the members 10 and 11 and positioned at right angles thereto.
The members 10 and 11 are held together by relatively thin metal plate 13 which is painted so as to render its outlines 'substantially invisible.
A relatively narrow space 14 is lett between the members at the fore end and a wider space 15 at the rear end.
lVhen assembling the members for use, the member 12 is placed in the space or slot 14 and moved rearwardly when the plate 13 will enter the slot 1G in the member 12. By the joint thus made and by the members l() and 1,1 on each side of the slot 1/1, the member 12 is retained in place and held in an upright position. The member 12 has a per- Yfoi-ation 17 thru which a latch wire 18 passes to lock the member 12 and prevent its removal until unlocked by removal ot the wire.
A. ballast rod 19 swings on a pivot 2O and is normally contained in the slot 15, and has its tree end turned back upon itself at 21 to increase its weight without increasing its length. The ballast rod is also locked in vertical extended position by the latch wire 18, as clearly shown.
rlhe member 12 has a perforation 22 thru which to pass a cord 23 to anchor the device by the weight 2li.
'lo pack the device lor shipment, the meniber 12 is unlatched and ren'ioved; the rod '19 is raised to its position between the members 10 and 11 and the member 12 is placed flat over the members 10 and 11, thus economizing space and making a compact package.
The parts may quickly be assembled and knocked down and packed.
Having described my invention what i claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:-
A decoy simulating a swimming bird, comprising,` two like buoyant members spaced apart to provide an open slot therebetween; a plate overlying said members bridging' the slot and secured to both members to hold them in spaced relation; a relatively thin member Vertical to the buoyant members having a slot in its rear end to receive said plate When said members is slid int-o position between the 'separated buoyant members; a ballast rod, normally retained in said slot between the buoyant members and pivoted at one end thereto near the longitudinal Center thereof and arranged to swing on said pivot into a position vertical to said buoyant members and a latch to hold said rod and said vertical mem* ber in place. i
In testimony WhereoiFl I hereunto 'set my hand. l
CLARENCE L. DEWTEY.
