To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK W. STELL- ING, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Hartford, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and Improved Target, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates more especially to the class of targets used upon comparatively short ranges, as in buildings and similar places, and an object of my invention, among others, is to produce a structure that shall be comparatively inexpensive to make and that shall be particularly efficient in use.
One form of structure embodying my invention, and in the construction and use of which the objects herein set out, as well as others, may be attained, is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side view of my improved structure shown as broken away at the center. 7

In the accompanying drawings, the numeral 7 denotes one of the uprights, of which there are preferably two, located one at each end of a butt plate 8, the latter being preferably constructed of metal and extending across from one to the other-of the uprights. An anchor 9 is secured to the butt plate, in the form shown, this being in the nature of a screw-eye held in'place by nuts, and with one end of a track cable secured thereto in any suitable manner. A bufler 11 of rubber or any other elastic or resilient material is mounted upon the cable and a receiver 12 is located to receive a carrier traveling along the track cable. In the preferred form of construction, and as shown herein, this receiver is of U-shape, its arms being located on opposite sides of the cable and the shank of the screw-eye passing through the base of the receiver and having a nut to secure the receiver in place.
The track cable 10 is secured atits end sheave 18 is mounted between the side parts to rest against the edge of the post that serves as a track for the holder. The holder may be located in different positions upon the post, as shown in full and dotted lines in Fig. 1 of the drawings, and it may be retained in these difierent positions in any suitable manner. In the structure herein shown notches 19 are located at intervals along the edge of the post to receive the sheave 18, and the track cable 10 will be sufliciently taut to draw the sheave into the notches and retain it therein. A handle lever 20 with a handle 21 is pivotally se cured between the side parts 15 of the holder and serves as a means for locating the holder well above the heads of the persons at the firing point.
A target carrier 22 consists of a U-shaped frame having openings in its branches 23 to receive the cable 10. Sheave supports are secured to the base of the carrier frame, each support consisting of posts 24, each having a foot 25 to receive a rivet or like means for securing the side part to the base of the 'U-shaped frame, and a plate 26 extends across and is secured to the posts at their upper ends. Each of the sheave supports preferably consists of two posts and one plate, there being two of these supports secured to the base of the U-shaped frame of the carrier and each of said supports faces in an opposite direction from that in which the other support faces, as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawing. Supporting sheaves 27 are secured to the plates 26, preferably on the opposite side thereof from that to which the posts 24 are secured to said plate.
A target support 28 is secured to the I under side of the carrier, preferably at its lengthwise center and between the sheave supports, this construction stiffening the U-shape, the ends of its branches having outturned feet that serve as a means for attachment of the support to the carrier. A clip 29 is secured to that side of the target support opposite the firing point, the support thus serving the purpose of a shield to the clip and preventing injury such as would result from being struck by bullets.
This clip is preferably .a spring clip, .such as are commonly used as clothes pins and it may be secured in place in any suitable manner and in position to hold the target 30 so that it will be suspended below the support 28. All of the-parts are constructed of comparatively thin metal bent into the forms shown and described which enables them to be cheaply constructed and which causes them to be particularly strong and durable.
The branches 23 of the target carrier are so located that they will pass between the arms of the receiver, which arms are flared outwardly, and as the carrier passes between said arms any swaying which it may have is brought to a stop so that the target is held steady.
While I have shown and described herein one form of apparatus embodying my inprovements, this may be departed from to a greater or lesser degree and yet be Wlillll ll the spirit and intent of the invention.
I claim-- l. A butt, a cable secured at one end to the butt, a target carrier mounted on the table and including a base, sheave supports ea-ch consistingof uprights having feet bymeans of which they are secured to the base and a cross piece uniting the uprights, and sheaves mounted on said cross pieces between the uprights.
'2. A target carrier for a target apparatus including a U -shaped frame the branches of which have openings to receive a cable, sheave supports each consisting of uprights with feet to receive fastenings to secure the uprights to the base of the support, a plate connecting the upper ends of each pair of supports, sheaves rotatably mounted on said plates, and means for securing a target to the under side of the car rier.

A carrier for a target apparatus including a 'U-shaped frame having upwardly extending arms, sheave supports each consisting of two uprights secured to the frame and across plate, said supports being located between said arms, sheaves secured to the cross plates, and a .U-shaped target support secured to the under side of the frame; 2

- sheave supports each consisting of two uprights located on opposite sides of the targetsupport and with plates secured to the upper ends of said uprights, said supports being located between said arms and sheaves rotatably mounted on said plates.
5. A target apparatus including a cable -track, means for raising and lowering one end .of the track, a target carrier supported on said cable, a target support depending from said carrier, and a target holder located on that side of the support opposite from said raising and lowering means.
6. A target apparatus including a cable track, means for ra-ising and lowering one end of the track, a carrier movably mounted on said cable, a U-shaped target support depending from said carrier and with its branches located in line lengthwise with the carrier, and atarget holder secured to one of the branchesof said support on the opposite side thereof from said raising and lowering means.
7. A target apparatus including a cable track a target carrier supported on and movable from end-to end of said cable, a target support depending from said carrier, a butt located at one end of the cable, and a target holder located on that side of the support facing said butt.
8. A target apparatus including atrack cable, means for securing one end of the cable, a holder including a frame comprising two side parts, means for securing the cablebetw'eenthe free ends of the side parts and said side parts to each other, a sheave pivotally mounted between the side parts, a support extending between the side parts to receive said sheave, and a handle lever pivotally mountedbetween the side parts and depending therefrom.
9. target apparatus including a holder comprising a strip bent to form a handle at its center and with projecting ends, a pin securing said ends together, a cable secured to .said pin, means for securing the other end of the cable, a support extending between the side parts of said holder, and a sheave pivotally mounted between the side parts of the holder and engaging said support.

A target apparatus including a holder comprising a strip bent to form a handle at its center and with projecting ends, a pin securing said ends together, a cable secured to said pin, means for securing the otherend of the cable, a support extending between the side parts of said holder, a sheave pivotally .mounted between the side parts of the holder and engaging said sup port, a handle comprising a strip of metal formed into the handle portion at its center for pivotally securing the free ends of said supported on said plates, and a U-shaped side parts to the side parts of said support. target carrier comprising branching arms 11.
