To all whom it may concern: I

Be it known that I, CHARLES BOGNAR, a subject of the King of Hungary, residing at Hamilton, in the Province of Ontario and Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Dressers and Folding Beds, of which the following is a specification. I

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in combined dressers and folding beds.

The primary object of the invention is the provision of a' combined folding bed and dresser wherein the bed is normally folded into the dresser in a manner to be entirely hidden from view and to permit the free use of the dresser in the ordinary way as well as in no manner changing the appearance of the dresser.

A further object of the device is to provide a compactly foldable bed carried by a dresser, sections of'the dresser being separable for automatically positioning the bed bottom in its operative arrangement when the sections are separated, an initial folding means being arranged for the bed bottom operable forwardly of the dresser and adapted for actuation during the closing of the sections.

A still further object is to provide an article of furniture whereby a dresser and a bed are arranged compactly for taking up only the room necessary for a dresser when the bed is not in use, such as during the daytime, the bed however, being readily unfolded by'separating portions of the dresser when it is desired to use the bed such as durin the night time.

18 and 19 adapted for normal arrangement in contact with each other and secured by a hook and eye latch 20 while a forward section 21 is hingedly connected as at 22 with the remainder of the dresser top 11, such forward portion resting upon the for: ward dresser section 19' when closed. The

being carried by the rear section 18 and spaced apart one above the other, forming an intervening receiving compartment 23 within which one end section 24 of a bed is horizontally secured while a plurality of mattress sections 25 are adapted for mounting upon the bed section 24 within the said space 23. A false panel 26 is arranged at the end of the section 18 between the outer ends of the drawers- 17 giving the outward appearance of a three-drawer cabinet while in a similar manner, three false panels 27' are provided in the corresponding end of th front section 19. A bed bottom section 28 is horizontally secured within the front section 19 in a space 29 arranged between two of the forwardly opening drawers 16, a false panel 30 being provided in the section 19 forwardly thereof.

31 and 32 therein while the inner block carrying portions of the levers are offset at the substantially central pivotal portions 39 thereof for allowing the inner end portions to freely slide within the space 23 of the rear section 14 beneath the bed bottom section 24 when the two dresser sec-' tions are closed in contact with each other. e The complete operation of the device will be apparent from the-foregoing detailed description of the elements thereof, it being understood that when the dresser is closed as shown in Figs. 2 and 4, it is only necessary to release the latches 20 and open the top section 21 and pull forwardly the section 19 to unfold the bed, the sections of which automatically fall to their open position as shown in Fig. 3. The mattress sections 23 are then placed thereon while the folding of the bed is accomplished by substantially reversing the operation in piling up the mattress sections 25 upon the bed bottom section 2 1 within the space 23 of the rear dresser section 18. The handle portions 35 of the levers 33 are then forced downwardly which elevates the blocks 36 and breaks the hinged bed bottom sections centrally whereby a rearward sliding movement imparted to the front section 19 holds up the bed bottom and closes the dresser sections together, whereupon the same may be readily retained by the latches 20. It will be seen that a serviceable device is arranged which includes a bed and dresser arrangement, the same being adapted as a dresser in. the day-time and as a bed at night while the drawer members of the cabinet are always arranged accessible and readily operable.

What I claim as new is:-- 1. A dresser bed comprising oppositely arranged cabinet sections, bed bottom sections hingedly connected together with their Y end portions fixedly carried within the said cabinet sections, and initial folding means for the bed bottom carried by one of the said cabinet sections adapted for actuation forwardly of the device.

2. A device of the class described comprising two drawer cabinet sections having receiving spaces substantially centrally arranged therein, stationary bed bottom sections horizontally secured within the spaces rea ers tions hingedly connected'together and also hinged to the forward ends of the afore mentioned stationary bed bottom sections,-

the device when closed being arranged with the foldable bed bottom sections in an upright position within the said cabinetsections.

4:. A device of the class described comprising two drawer cabinet sections having receiving' spaces substantially centrally arranged therein, stationary bed bottom sections horizontally secured within the spacesof said sections, foldable bed bottom sec tions hingedly connected together and-also hinged to the adjacent ends of the aforementioned stationary bed bottom sections, angular operating levers pivotally carried by the forwardly positioned cabinet section and having handle portions projecting forwardly of said sections, the rear portions of said levers being positioned Within the rear cabinet section when the device is folded and. supportingly arranged centrally beneath the foldable bed bottom sections when the device is open in its bed forming arrangement.

5. A device of the class described comprising separate cabinet sections, a sectional top for the said cabinet sections, a bed bottom formed of separate hinged sections and carried by said cabinet sections, angular levers oppositely carried by one of said cabinet sections provided with block portions at their inner endsarranged with transverse grooves within which the adjacent hinges of the adjacently positioned bed bottom sections are adapted to seat when the bed is open, the forward ends. of the levers being arranged forwardly of the device whereby a downward movement thereof is adapted for the initial folding operation of the ,bed bottom structure.
