Description

CHRISTOPHER C. TRINKLE, F BOMNEY, INDIANA.
COMPOUND FOR TEMPEBING STEEL.
No Drawing.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, (.hnus'roriiuu C. TRINKLE, a citizen of the United States, re-- siding at Romney, in the county of Tipper canoe and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Compounds for Tempering Steel, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a compound. for
tempering steel which is neither poisoi'ious nor explosive and has for its object the pro duction of a compound of the above described character and of a process of using the same and to this end my invention con-i sists in a composition of matter composed of the following coi'istituents, combined in a pulverized state inthe following proportions, namely:
Bicarbonate of soda 2 quarts Willow charcoal 2 quarts Sal ammoniac 1. quart Sulfur 1 quart Copperas u 1 quart Table salt 1 quart These constituents are first to be pulver ized, then combined in the proportions stated and then thoroughly mingled in their pulverized state by agitation.
In the use of my compound to temper any Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 23, 1917.
Application filed February 19, 1917. Serial No. 149,418.
article cistcel I employ the following process, namely:
1n each instance that part of the article of steel to be tempered is heated in the fire to a cherry-red, then removed and covered with the compound by sprinkling or otherwise, then returned to the lire and slowly reheated to a cherry-red, then removed and bathed in warm water, then the temper is draun until a file lakes hold regardless of (0101' and then deposited in warm. water until cool.
By the use of my compound in the manner stated articles of steel may be thoroughly tempered and materially toughened by a common ironovorker.
In the above described compound and process of using the same I produce a new and useful invention for tempering steel, toolsteel and steehtools of every description.
What 1 claim as my invention and desire in secure by Letters Patent, is:
The herein .lescril' ed compound, comprising bicarbonate of soda, willow charcoal, Sill :nnmouiac, sulfur, copper-as, and table sail, substantially as described and for the purpose specified.
CHRISTOPHER G. TRINKLE.
