UNITED STATES PATENT oFncE.
RUDOLPH ALBRECHT KRATOCHWILL, OF BRISTOL, VIRGINIA.
BRICK-GOAL.
Application filed May 24,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RUDOLPH A. KRA'rooH- wILL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bristol, in the county of \Vashington and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brick-Coal, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to artificial fuel and has for its object theproduction of an efficient coal brick formed from coal dust which is generally considered as a waste product.
Another object of this invention is the production of an eflicient formula whereby the coal dust may be formed in brick or other small bodies, such as lumps and the like.
Other objects and advantages of the present invention will appear throughout the following specification and claim.
By referring to the drawing, it will be seen that a perspective view is indicated in Figure 1, showing one form of the coal brick which may be employed, and
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through the brick.
It should be understood that the coal brick may be made of any design or shape with: out departing from the spirit of the invention, for itis not desired to limit the present invention to any form as to the shape or configuration of the body.
One of the mostimportant features of the present invention is the composition from which the coal brick is formed. In producing the coal brick I employ fourteen ounces of dry coal dust and mix the same with a solution of thirty grains of arabic gum and eighteen drains of water. The
thirty grains of arabic gum are thoroughly Specification of Letters Patent.

mixed with the eighteen drams of water until a proper solution is produced and this solution is then thoroughly mixed with the coal dust until a suitable paste is produced whereupon the paste is placed in a suitable press for the purpose of producing the desired conformation of the body of the brick or for the purpose of producing the desired contour. After the brick has been com-. pressed in a suitable press, the same is removed from the press and placed in a warm atmosphere until the same becomes hardened. A coat of varnish is used for making the brick waterproof and preventing the same from being effected by the atmospheric conditions. It should be understood that the arabic gum is used for the purpose of producing a binder and will also facilitate thg burning of the brick When placed upon a re.
Now by referring particularly to the draw ing, it will be seen that 1 designates the body of the brick which is formed of the composition above referred to, to wit: coal dust mixed with a solutionof arabic gum and water. This body 1 is then coated with a water-proof coating 2 of any suitable or desired chemical ingredient so: as to prevent the body of the brick from being effected by atmospheric conditions.
' I claim A coal brick consisting of dry coal dust held together by a binder of gum arabic and having an external coating of varnish.
In testimony wherof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
RUDOLPH ALBRECHT KRATOCHWILL.
