Be it known that I, JOHN R. McGIFFiiRi, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Duluth, county of St. Louis, and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cable-Blocks, of which the following is a specification, the principle of the invention being herein explained and the best mode in which I have contemplated applying that principle, so as to distinguish it from other inventions.
The subject of the present invention is a cable block and, in particular, means for inclosing the arms of a frame or housing in which is mounted a pulley in order to brace the same and to prevent the accidental dislodgment of the cable received over such pulley therefrom. To the accomplishment of the foregoing and related ends, said invention, then, consists of the means hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
The annexed drawing and the following description set forth in detail certain mechanism embodying the invention, such disclosed means constituting, however, but one of various mechanical forms in which the principle of the invention may be used.
In said annexed drawing Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved cable block; Fig. 2 is an end elevation partially in section; and Fig. 3 is a section on the line 33, Fig. 2.
In Fig. 1 there is shown a frame 1, in which is journaled a pulley or sheave 2 upon a suitable bearing which need not be described. Extending from the upper portion of the frame are two arms 8 and 1, which are in substantial parallelism and extend upwardly for some distance beyond the sheave 2. Mounted upon a pin or stud 5 received in the upper end of the arm 3 is a clevis 6 or other arm, which is provided with an aperture 7 therein, adapted to be alined with other apertures 8 formed in the upper end of the arm 4:. When these apertures are alined a pin 9 may be passed therethrough, thus locking the clevis in the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2.
Extending laterally from the bottom end of the arm 4 toward the arm '3 is a short bar or arm 10 terminating in a concave socket portion 11. Formed integrally with the clevis 6 is another laterally extending arm 12, which is provided with a convex terminal porti'oir 13 adapted to en-gage and to be seated in the concave socket 11 of the arm 10 when the clevis is in its closed position. The terminal portions or surfaces of the arms 10 and 12 are inclined at such an angle to the central plane of the sheave and frame that the clevis 6 may be swung freely away from the arm 10, although obviously the exact contour shown does not need to be used for the ends of the arms 10 and 12. Similarly when the clevis is swung into its closed position the end of the arm 12 is adapted to engage snugly in the concave terminal of the arm 10 and to cooperate therewith to provide a locking bar extending across the frame above the cable which will be passed over the sheave 2 to prevent the former from being dislodged from the sheave and from slipping out of the frame members 8 and 4:.
The frame members 2 are provided with extending surfaces 14 converging toward the depression in the sheave 2, as will be seen from Fig. 2.
The arms 10' and 12 serve when in engagement as a rigid spacing bar between the arms 3 and 1 which not only prevents the housing from contacting on the sheave, but also serves toprevent'the cable from being thrown above the housings.
Other modes of applying the principle of my invention may be employed instead of the one explained, change being made as regards the mechanism herein disclosed, provided the means stated by any of the following claims or the equivalent ,of such stated means be employed.
I therefore particularly point out and distinctly claim as my invention 1. In a cable block the combination of a frame adapted to receive a pulley therein, a clevis pivotally attached to one side of said frame and adapted to extend across the same into attachment with the other side, and means, part on said frame and part on said clevis, adapted to interlock and form a rigid brace between the two sides of said frame.
