. TRANSPQRTABLE POWER-WINCH.
To all 'whom t may concern.' p
Be it known that we, PAUL Louis HooHoN,
a citizen of the French Republic, and
NICOLAS GJORGJEVITCH, a subject of the King of Serbia, both residents of' Paris, Seine, France, have invented certain new and useful Transportable Power-Winches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a portable power winch and has for its object to, construct such a winch in a' compactfform together with the motor for driving the saine, such as an internal combustion motor oran electric motor,'and the winding drum with suitable reduction gear, these all being mounted on a base-so that the whole structure may be easily transported where required.
Afurther object of the invention is to provide means for attaching the structure to the ground in such a way that the point of attachment will always be in a straight line with the direction of the pull on the winding cable, in order that the winch will always worl; under the most favorable conditions.
Another object of the invention is the-provision of a .device for preventing the slipping back of thefree endo'f the cable where it is unwound behind the-drum if this end is released bythe man vholding it.
. Theinvention'also has for its object to 'provide a device by means of which it is possible to arrest the movement of the load during its course, and to transfer the pull of the load on the cable from the winding drum to the base, and thus to the point of attachment independently of the winch drum.
An additional object`- of the invention is the provision of a handdevice by means of which the winding drum can be turned in a reverse direction to that in which it is driven by the motor so that the coils around the the direc- Specification of Letters Patent.

scale showing the device forturning the drum in a reverse direction; f
Figs. 6 and 7 show to valarger scale a 'front view and sidev view of the attachment device connected by ashort length of cable to the structure and permitting the load to be relieved from the winch drum and transferred to the base of the apparatus and to nished with hooks or rings 2 to facilitate its transport and manipulation when placing it in position. -f Upon the base l are secured two plates '3-3'between and in which are mounted and supported thev principal elements of the mechanism. Between these plates 3 3 there is mounted between two smaller plates 5-5 a large worm wheel 4 of which the shaft 6 turns in two sleeves or bushes forming elongated bearings between the plates 3 vand 5. Upon one end of the shaft 6 which projects beyond one of the plates 3 is mounted the drum 7 of the winch.
The worm wheel 4 gears with a worm 8 cut upon the shaft 9v at right angles to the shaft 6V of the wheel 4. This shaft 9 is 'driven from a motor, such as an internal combustion motor 10 of any suitable type, by means of a train of reduction gear 1l. In the construction shown this reduction gear consists of a toothed wheel mounted upon the shaft of the motor 10, a toothed wheel on the shaft 9 of the worm, and two toothed wheels upon a secondary shaft, parallel to the others. The invention, however, is not lini- Y ited to this construction as it will be apparent that any suitable means may be employed to secure the necessary reduction between the motor and the worm shaft.
The worm 8 can also be rotated by hand iny order to turn the wheel 4 with the drum 7 through a short distance in certain cases,
for instance to turn it backwardly so as to loosen the windings of the cable around the drum. Such -an operation may be useful,
for example, in the case of the stoppageof the motor when itis desired to re-start'it; in such a case the pull of the load on the cable would iirst be relieved `by means of the device hereinafter described. The hand device comprises a pinion 12 mounted upon the end of the shaft 9; with this pinion'may gear a worm 13 upon a transverse shaft le turned Iby a crank 15; Fig. 5. nism composed of the worm 13, shaft Maud crank 15 need only be placed in position when it is desired to turn the drum in a reverse direction.
The apparatus is anchored to a post fixed in the ground by means of a cable 16, of which the ends are attached to one end of `the base 1 by means of eyes .161 approximately equidistant from the line of the cable 24 vwhere it runs on to the drum 7 The .attachment cable 16 passes around a pulley 17 mountedon plates 18 which extend from a ring 19 adapted to be passed over a post .drivenintothe ground; upon this post the whole pull of the apparatus and the load is taken. This arrangement is an important `and characteristic feature of the invention.
^ It insures that the pull is always exerted in a straight line from the object .to be hauled .to .the point of attachment to the ground, under which'the best conditions of working are obtained, and as the whole apparatus forms a block simply resting upon the `ground it will swing relatively to the post and automatically set itself in such a manner that-the line of the pull is always kept in a straight line fromv the object to be hauled `to the post when the direction of the pull is changed, as this pull is generally greater than the resistance to movement over the ground due to the weight of the winch.
At the front end of the support 1 is provided a device for use when the pulling up of the load is stopped, and serving to relieve the pull thereof upon the drum of the winch, the pull being transferred to the base of the apparatus .and from the latter to Ythe post.
This device is shown in detail in Figs. 6, 7 and 8, Fig. 8 being a .partial plan view corresponding to Fig. 6, and showing the method of attachment of the short cable 20 adapted' to transfer the pull directly to the base of the apparatus.
The device comprises aV short length of cable 20 attached to the base 1 by an eye 201, disposed on the bisecting line of the angle between the two ends of the cable 16attached. vto the post in the ground, that iswto say,
along the axis of the pull. At the other vend of the cable 2O is fastened a member 21' vhaving a j aw 22 adapted to receive the, cable 24E; this Ajaw has a recess at the center in which the cable can be gripped by means of the enlarged end .of a screw 23 (Fig. 6). The member 25 is a locking member adapted to secure the loop in the cable v20 for attaching purposes.
This mecha-Y Fig. 10 which shows an example of the use of the winch, indicates the mode of operation lof the Yapparatus hereinbefore described. lf for any reason it is desired to stop the haulage of thegun during its upward movement, it vmay tbe indispensable or advantageous immediately to relieve the pull which 1t exerts on the winch drum. lFor* this purpose Lthe-screw23 in the jaw 22 of the member 21 is caused to engage the cable 24 at the the cable `if the man releases Lit. Thisy device yconsists of Va block .27 .mounted upon -a fixed pi-vot 26 and carrying a Ymovable jaw .28 pivoted at upon the zblocki27., this jaw .being acted upon at its end '.29 `by a spring 31. By vmeans of this ydev-ice'the cable is left free to ytravel in the direction a as its free end is Ipulled in that direction, but if it is released and the cable vis pulled 'in the direction y by 2the load ,it will 4be vgripped y between the movable jaw 28 and the block 27.- The whole device ,can slide laterally on kthe pivot 26., so as always to be :in 'line with .the free end of the cable no matter 5 what .number vof turns :of cable Ygare 'on/the drum.
The motor 10 is provided with alllthe e100 usual accessories :necessary for itsoperation; it 'is :provided with fastartingwdevice 'and :handle or apulley 110.?, adapted toreceive a vstarting belt. The motor may be .cooled by water orl l This-latter lmet'hodprwhch v.permits `of -a considerable reduction` in .weight 1s the most convenient in anumber of cases, the more so if the motor 1s not required for continuous working. The motor is provided with a fan .10, suitably placed.
The fuel and oil reservoirs are lprovidedat 32-33 between the plates 3. TheV whole .structure is inclosed'in a casing suitablyl perforated for the circulation of air and with holes 321, 331 for giving accessy to the reservoirs for @filling purposes and so forth.
The apparatus thus .constructed forms a compact structure which can be handled and transported easily. Such van apparatus :can be -used for various purposes, in workshops, docks andl so forth, and itis especially useful for military purposes as. already indicated. .l
The invention is not limited to the details of construction described, and as will be well understood it maybe carried into' effect with various modifications in kdetails v4withs out departing from the Aspirit of the invention. A
