Description

F. S. HAZELTON! FASTENER- A PPLICATIGN FILED JAN. 8. I917 Lmwm; Patented 0ct.16,1917.
Witnesses Attorneys ventor FRED S. HAZELTON, OF NORTON, KANSAS.
FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 16, 1917.
Application filed January 8, 1917. Serial No. 141,318.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRED S. HAZELTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Norton, in the county of Norton and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Fastener, of which the following is a specification.
It is the object of the present invention to provide novel means whereby opposed portions of an article of any kind, such as the upper of a shoe, may be drawn together and fastened.
It is within the province of the disclosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the present invention appertains.
With the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 shows in side elevation, a fastener embodying the present invention, the parts being in the positions which they will assume when constituent elements of the fastener are partly closed together;
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section showing the fastener in a closed or locked position;
Fig. 3 is a plan of the base plate which is attached to one part of the shoe;
Fig. 4 is a plan of the tongue which cooperates with both base plates;
Fig. 5 is a bottom plan of the base plate which is attached to the upper part of the shoe;
Fig. 6 is an elevation wherein a modified form of snap button appears.
In the accompanying drawings, the numeral 1 indicates one side of the upper of a shoe. Attached to the under surface of the side 1 in any desired way is a base plate 2 which may be of slightly tapered construction, as indicated in Fig. 5. The base plate 2 carries a projecting resilient socket 3 which, if desired, may extend through the side 1 of the shoe. By means of a hinge 4:, the outer end of the base plate 2 is attached to a tongue 5 which, as shown at 6, tapers inwardly, to define a reduced tip or end 7 The tongue 5 has an opening 12. The other 10, the base plate 9 tapers toward the inner end. The inner end of the base plate 9' is provided with an undercut abutment 15 which may be bifurcated to form fingers 16. The base plate 9 carries a resilient button 14.
In practical operation, the end 7 of the tongue 5 is inserted into the undercut abutment 15, the fingers 16 facilitating such an operation. The base plate 2 is then pressed downwardly toward the base plate 9 and the opposed portions 1 and 8 of the shoe will be drawn together and tightened, transversely of the foot of the wearer. Ultimately, the button 14 on the base plate 9 passes through the opening 12 in the tongue 5 and engages with the socket 3 on the base plate 2.
The structure hereinbefore described preferably but not necessarily is made of metal.
The socket 3 and the button 11- form, in effect, a snap fastener, and it is to be understood that this snap fastener may be of any desired form.
In Fig. 6 of the drawings, a modified form of the invention has been shown. In Fig. 6 one part of the shoe or other article is denoted by the reference numeral 84, and the snap button includes a relatively rigid part 35, and a resilient part 36 cooperating with the rigid part 35. I am aware of the fact that no specific kind of a snap fastener can be claimed in this application, and Fig. 6 is introduced for the purpose of making it evident that the snap fastener or button may be of any form.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is An article of wearing apparel comprising side members; a base plate attached to the upper surface of one side member; a tongue hinged at its outer end to the outer end of the base plate and lying beneath the base plate, the tongue being provided at its inner end with a reduced tip and having an opening intermediate its ends; a second base plate lying beneath the tongue and secured to the outer surface of the other side member, the second base plate being provided.
atits inner end with an undercut abutment in which the tip is removably seated, the abutment being bifurcated to direct the tip into the undercut portion of the abutment; as my own, I have hereto affixed my signaand separalble, coaciizg Efitstening telemgnts ture in the presence of two Witnesses.
permanent y secure 0 e respec ive ase plates, one fastening element extending FRED HAZELTON' through the opening in the tongue, to engage Witnesses:
with the other fastening element. WILLIAM A. Boom,
In testimony that I claim the foregoing H. M. JoNEs.
