ToaZZ whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDWARD EnIoKsoN, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Cliftondale,zin the county of Essex: and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Looper Mechanisms for Sewing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates-to looper mechanisms for lock-stitch sewing machines, and has for its object the production Oflit device of this character which is particularly adapted to be operated at high rates of speed.
'The invention consists primarily .in a looper mounted in asuitable support and provided with an eye ofiset from the shank thereof, said looper being provided with actuating means whereby said looper-may be oscillated about the axis of said shank, and said support being also provided with means for oscillating said support about a pivot on which it is mounted.
The invention further consists inhoscillating said looper and its support by cam mechanisms so timed that the eye of the looper will be moved in a curved path around a loop hook in one direction and then around the needle in the opposite direction.
The invention furtherconsists in'providing means for temporarily stopping the movement of the looper eye while the needle is moving upward with the loop and then returning the eye with increased speed to its normal position.
'The invention consists further in-certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts which will be fully understood by reference to'the description of the drawings and to the claims hereinafter given.
'For'the purpose of illustrating theinvention. one preferred form thereof isillustrated in the drawings, this form having been found to give satisfactory andreliable results, although it is to be understood that the various 'instrumentalities of whichlthe invention consists can be variously 2 arrangedand organized and that the invention is'not limited to the precisezarrangement and organization of these instrumentalities as herein shown; and described.

In the drawings, 10 is. a portion of the frame of a sewing machine having a hub 11 formed thereon through which extends a revolubleshaft 12. This shaft 12 has'keyed thereto the cam disks 13 and 14. The :frame 10 is also provided with a fixed stud 15011 which is mounted the oscillating member 16 carrying a barbed needle 17, said needle having its hooked portion 18 on one side of said needle, as shown in Fig. 12 of the drawings.
Pivotedat 18 tothe member 16 is a link 19 through which oscillatory movement may be imparted tothe member .16 from anysuitable source of-power. The member 16 has alsosecured thereto a' loop hook 20. The frame- 1O alsohas secured theretoaxwork support 21 having a' slot 22 in a horizontal portion thereof.
The frame 10 is also provided with a headed stud 23 on which is pivotally mounted a tubular member 24. In the tubular member 24 is mounted a cylindrical shank 25 of a looper 26 having an eye 27 offset from the axis of said shank 25.
The member 24 has pivotally connected therewith at 28 one end of a link 29, the opposite end of which is pivotally connected to a lever 30 pivoted at 31 to said frame 10. The lever 30 carries a roll 32 moving in a, cam path 33 in one face of the disk 14. As the disk: 14 revolves in the direction of the arrow a, the lever 30 is moved about its pivot 31 and transmits movement through the link 29 to the member 24 and causes it to be oscillated about the horizontal pivot member 23. The lower end of the shank 25 of the looper 26has clamped thereto the member34 having an arm 35 extending latorally therefrom to which a link 36 is pivoted .37. The opposite end. of said link 36 is connected to a rod 38 by means of the pivot pin39 perpendicular to the pivot pin 37. This makes a universal connection between the rod 38 and the arm 35. The opposite endof the rod 38 is threaded as at 40 to a nut 41 carried by a member 42.
Thethreaded portion 40 of the rod 38 has also mounted thereon the nuts 43 by a member 45 having a pivot pin 46 extending therethrough and into the arms 44. The sleeve 41 is adapted to revolve in the mem ber 42' about the axis of the connecting rod 38, and the member 45 is adapted to move about the axis of the pivot member 46, said axis being perpendicular to the axis of the rod 38, thus forming a universal connection between the rod 38 and the member 45. At 47 the member 45 is pivotally connected to the upper end of a lever 48, pivoted at 49 and having a roller 50 thereon adapted to move in the path 51 of the cam disk 13. As the cam disk 13 rotates about the axis of the shaft 12 in the direction of the arrow 64 on Fig. 1 of the drawings, an oscillating movement is imparted to the lever 40 and this oscillatory movement is imparted to the rod 38 and the arm '35, and thereby causes the looper member 26 to be oscillated about the axis of its shank 25.
As the shaft 12 revolves the two disks 13 and 14 will impart movement simultaneously to the levers 30 and 48, and these movements will be transmitted through the connecting rods "29 and 38 to the tubular sleeve 24 and the laterally extending arm 35, thereby causing an oscillation of the looper member 26,
and at the same time an oscillation of the tubular member supporting said looper. These two combined oscillations cause the eye 27 of the looper 26 to move in a curved path fromits normal .position as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 7 intotheposition indicated in full lines in Fig; 8 of the draw lngs, thls movement passing around the loop 27 will be moved in a straight path with. in-
creased speed from the point shown in full lines in Fig. 9 to the point shown in dotted lines in Fig. 10. g
This movement of the eye inlthe path shown in dotted lines in Figs. 8, 9, and 10 of the drawings causes the thread if to be drawn around the looper hook and then around the needle 17 in position to be seized by the hook 18 of the needle as it is raised, as shown in Fig. 11 of the drawings.
The cam paths 33 and 51 are so constructed that the necessary throws have such time relationship to each other as to cause the eye 27 of the looper to move in the curved path'indicated in Figs. 7 to 10 of the drawings. The throws of the paths 33 and 51 provide forthe eye 27 of the looper coming temporarily to a standstill in the position indicated in Fig. 9 of the drawings until the needle has moved upwardly suiiiciently the'memberv 34 to said shank. To accommodate this variation in the position of the member 34 about the shank 25 ofthe looper 26, the connecting rod 38 may be shortened or lengthened as desired by adjusting the nut 41 on the thread end 40 of said connecting rod.
Both of the connecting rods 29 and 38 are on one side of the frame 10, whilethe cam 13 and the lever 48 are on the oppositeside of said frame, as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings. In order, therefore, to provide means whereby the member 45 maybe connected'to the lever 48, an opening 53 is formed in the frame 10, as shown in dotted lines in Figs. 1 and 3 of the drawings.
This makes a very efiective looper operating mechanism, which runs very. smoothly and without noise, and is particularly adapted for use on sewing machines run at a high rate of speed. 1'
It is believed that the operation and many advantages of this invention will be fully understood from the foregoing description.
Having thus described my invention, I claim: 7
1. In a device of the class described, .a hookedneedle; a looper having a rotatable shank and an eye with-its axis slightly olfset from and parallel to the axis of said shank; means for imparting two distinct oscillatory movements to said looper, one of said movements being about the axis of said shank and the other movement being:
about an axis perpendicular to the axis of .said shank; and means for preventing end movement of said shank.
2. In a device of the classdescribed, a hooked needle; a looper having a rotatable shank and an eye with its axis slightly offset from and parallel to theaxis of said shank; means for simultaneously imparting two distinct oscillatory movements to said looper, oneofsald movements'bem'g about the axis of said shank and the other movement being about an axis perpendicular. to.
the axis of said shank; and. means for preventing end movement of said shank.
3. In device of the class described, a hooked needle; a looper having a shank rotatable about its axis and provided with an eye the axis of which is substantially parallel to the axis ofsaid shank and offset therefrom; means. for oscillating said shank about a horizontal axis; and independent means for positively oscillating said looper about the axis of said shank.
