'To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ARTHUR E. JERRAM, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at-Leicester, in the county of Leicester, England, have invented certain Improvements in Sewing-li/Iachines, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like reference characters on the drawings indicating like parts in the several figures.
This invention relates to sewing machines, and more particularly to sewing machines of the type in which the work is fed by the lateral movements of the needle.
The object of'the invention is to improve the construction, arrangement and mode of operation of sewing machines of this class.
With the above object in View, certain features-of the invention relate to improved and simplified needle actuating devices by which the needle is projected through and withdrawn from the work, and is moved laterally in timed relation to its work piercing or retracting movements in a certain and reliable manner.
-A further feature of the invention consists in the provision of a needle straightening device for placing the needle incorrect work feeding position before the work is fed.
A still further feature of the invention contemplates the provision of an assistant feeding device arranged-to engage the forward side of the needle, .and to move in unison with the needle during its-lateral movements to assist in feeding the work. 7
Further features of the invention consist of certain constructions and combinations hereinafter described and claimed,the advantages of which will be obvious to one skilled in the art from the following description.

The work is fed by the lateral or transverse movement of' the needle while the needle is in the work. The movements imparted to the needle by the needle actuating mechanism to cause the needle to pierce the work and move laterally to feed the work, are substantially as follows: Starting with the needle in position above the work and the length of a stitch in advance of the last needle hole. the needle is projected downwardly through the work, and after it reaches its limiting position itis raised a sufiicient distance to throw out a loop of thread between the needle eye and the work. After the needle is raised a pause occurs in the vertical movement of the needle during which the needle is moved laterally or transversely to feed the work. When. the work has been fed a distance equal to the required length of stitch the needle is lifted from the work and is then moved laterally to bring it to its initial position ready to again perform the same cycle of operations. In
order to enable the needle to be actuated as described, the needle is mounted on a needle bar arranged to reciprocate vertically in a transversely movable frame 9. The vertie cal movements are imparted to the needle by mechanism connected with the needlebar and acting to reciprocate the needle bar vertically in the frame 9, and the lateral movements are imparted to the needle by mechanism which acts in timed relation to the .mechanism for reciprocating the needle bar mounted on the main shaft 11 of the machine, upon which member is mounted a lever 12 pivoted at 13 eccentrically on said rotary member and connected with the needle bar 14 by-means of a link 15. The lever 12 is provided with an arm 12 which projects througha-slot 16in the rear side of the member 10, and carries a cam roll engaging a cam groove 18 in a stationary member 18 mounted on the machine frame. The cam groove 18* is constructed in such a mannerthat the lever 12 is.moved angularly about its pivot with relation to the rotary member during the rotation of said member, thereby causing the point of connection. of said lever with the link togmove in an irregular path, and imparts ing a variable movement to the needle bar and the needle. It will be noted from an inspection of Figs. 4, 5, 6 and 7 that the point of connection of the lever 12 with the link 15 is caused to pause for somiionsiderable time adjacent the axis of the main shaft 11 during the rotation of the member 10. This pause occurs after the needle has penetrated the work and has been raised a sufficient distance to cause the loop of needle thread to be thrown downwardly therefrom, and continues while the shuttle engages and passes through the loop of needle thread,
and also gives time for the needle to move forward and feed the work.
The needle bar 14 is arranged to reciprocate vertically in the transversely movable frame 9, and in order to support said frame so asto permit it to move transversely, the frame is mounted upon a hollow rod 19 arranged to slide in bearings in the machine frame. The frame is steadied in its transverse movements by a guide comprising a plate 20 provided with a groove to receive a rib 21 on the frame 9. The slide rod 19 is provided at its left-hand extremity (Fig. 2) with a die 22 pivoted upon a pin which extends through a slot in the slide rod 19 and is secured to the end of a pendant arm 23 carried by a rock shaft 24 extending from the front to the rear of the machine: The other end of the rock shaft 24 carries a curved arm 25 connected at its extremity with a toggle mechanism. Said toggle mechanism comprises two members 26 and 27 jointed togetherby means of a pin 28, the member 26 being pivoted at 28 to the extremity of the arm 25. The member 27 is arranged for adjustment about an axis which is substantially in alinement with the central joint of the toggle in the position which said toggle assumes at the beginning of the work feeding movement, and to this end said member is connected at 30 to a member 31 pivoted at 32 on the machine frame. The axis of the member 31 is arranged so that it is substantially in alinement with the axis of the central joint of the toggle when the toggle is in position at the beginning of the work feedingmovement. In order to secure the member 31, and thereby the member 27 of the toggle, in adjusted position, a screw threaded rod projects rearwardly from the member 31 through a slot 33 in the casing of the machine, and a clamping nut 34 threaded on said rod engages the frame at the sides of the slot. In order to reciprocate the central joint of the toggle, and thereby impart transverse movements to the frame 9, a cam roll 35 is mounted upon the pin 28 which connects the two toggle members, and is arranged to engage a cam groove 36 in the face of the cam disk 37. It is to be noted that by arranging the member 27 of the toggle for adjustment about an axis which is in alinement with the central joint of the toggle when the toggle is in position at the beginning of the work feeding movement, the length of the transverse movement of the frame 9 and of the needle may be varied to vary the length of feed while the needle is caused to assume the same position at the beginning of its work feeding movement, regardless of the position in which the to gle member 27 is adjusted.
The shuttle 7 is arranged to oscillate in a plane parallel with the line of feed and with the line of the seam, and to this end is arranged in a guideway 38 in the forward portion of the'machine frame below the work table 3. The shuttle is driven by an oscillatory shuttle driver 39 also arranged to oscillate in a plane parallel with the plane of the needle and the line of the seam. The shuttle driver is oscillated through somewhat over three-quarters of a revolution to impart a corresponding oscillatory movement to the shuttle. The shuttle driver consists of a projection which fits into a suitably formed recess in the frame of the shuttle, said projection being formed on a member 40 carried upon an oscillatory shaft 41 to which oscillatory movements of somewhat over three-quarters of a revolution are imparted by suitable connections from a cam actuated lever 41.
The shuttle driver is provided with a needle straightening device indicated at 42, which consists of an extension from the chine embodying the same. in its preferred driver. This extension projects through the circular raceway of the shuttle and during the last part'of the retrograde movement of the shuttle driver, engages the needle from the forward orleft-hand side. (Fig. 2), and if the needle has been deflected toward the loop-taking hook of the thread deflector 8 in penetrating the work, the needle straight-' ening device operates to push the needle up against the forward end of the slot in the work supporting table 3 into correct position for feeding the work and for cooperation driver. Said sleeve carries at its rear end-an arm 45 connected by a link 46 with the arm ofthe rock shaft 24. By means of these connections the frame 9, the needle and the assistant feed plate 43 are moved laterally or transversely in unison. The connection of the assistant feed plate with the mechanism for actuating the needle transversely in the direction of feed enables the extent of the lateral movement of the needle and assistant feed plate to be simultaneously adjusted. As the needle moves laterally to feed the work the left-hand side or edge (Fig. 2) of the plate -13 engages the forward side of the needle below the work table and advances in the direction of feed with the needle.
It is to-be noted that the needle straightening device-l2 and the assistant feed plate 43 operate to place the needle in correct work :feeding position at the beginning of the device or devices other than the needle. It is also to be understood that except as defined in the claims the invention is not limited to any particular machine or type of machine, or to any particular construction or arrangement of parts,
Having explained the nature and object of the invention. and having described a maform, what is claimed is 1. A sewing' machine, having, in combination, a device for engaging and feeding the work, means for moving said device into and out offengagement with the work, mech anism acting in timed relation to said means for reciprocating said device in the direction of feed comprising a toggle, connecting mechanism between said device and one of the members of said toggle, a cam roll carried by the central joint of the toggle, a cam for engagement with the cam roll to actuate said toggle to reciprocate said device, and provision for adjustment of said toggle to vary the extent of the reciprocatory movement of said device.

A sewing machine, having, in combination,a needle, a needle bar, a transversely movable frame inwhich theneedle bar' is mounted arranged to reciprocate to carry the needle into and out of engagement with the work, means to reciprocate the needle bar, and means for reciprocating said frame comprising a rock shaft connected with said frame, an arm on said rock shaft,
a toggle comprising a toggle member connected with said arm, a second toggle member, a cam roll carried by said toggle, a cam engaging said roll, an assistant feeding device comprising an assistant feed plate arranged on the opposite side of the work from the needle, a rock shaft on which said plate is mounted, an arm on said rock shaft, and a link connecting said arm with the arm on the first rock shaft. 1

A sewing machine, having, in combination, a needle, a needle bar, a transversely movable frame in which the needle bar is arranged to reciprocate to carry the needle into and out'of engagement with the work, means to reciprocate the needle bar, and means for reciprocating said frame comprising a rock shaft connected with-said frame, an arm on said rock shaft, a cam roll connected with said arm, a cam engaging said cam roll, an assistant feeding device comprising a feed plate arranged on the opposite side of the work from the needle, a rock shaft on which said plate is mounted, an arm on said rock shaft, and a link connecting said last arm with the arm on the first rock shaft. 2
14. A sewing machlne, having, in combination, a needle, a discoidal shuttle, an oscillating shuttle driver, and a needle straightening device consisting of a projection on the shuttle driver arranged to engage the needle during the backward movement of the shuttle driver.
15. A sewing machine, having, in combination, a needle, means for actuating the needle to feed the work, an auxiliary feeding device arranged to engage the needle below the work and move with the needle during the feed, a needle straightening de vice, and means'for actuating said device to engage the needle and force it against the auxiliary feeding device.
16. A sewing machine, having, in combination, stitch forming devices including a work feeding needle, a discoidal shuttle, an oscillating shuttle driver, and an oscillating assistant feeding device arranged to oscillate- (topics of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the "Commissioner of Patents,
