main ember frame, as' desired. During this movement the stirrup rocks on the glid g'eons IGse'asj-tG "readily adjust itself te the mighe ii'e'cl 'fihelfe'te zit ene end. The ether end of this segihentstlijportidii is borecl io s'lidebly circular outline of the ring. An approximately three-quarter circular collar 26 is in terposed between the upper edge of the main cutter frame and the lower face of ring 22 and is of somewhat less diameter than the ring. so as to permit the-ring to project cured to the under face of plate '27 and eX- tends somewhat below the ring22.
An inwardly projecting annular collar 29 is, se-
cured to the flange member 28 near its'lower end. This collar fits snugly about the collar 26 so as to project slightly inward beneath the ring 22.- .By this means the cover is 'mounted about the ring so as to beIrota-table thereon but secured against, outward movement relatively thereto. 7
The flange ring or member 28 is provided with an integral radially projecting arm 30 which is centrally bored to slidably receive the stem 31 of a latch head32. The inner I portio'n of this member is enlarged to form a, chamber 83 which receives'the expansion spring 84 mounted aboutthe stem 31 and confined betwee'nthe head 32 and the outer ,end of the chamber. The latch 32 is adapted to engage the teeth 35 formed integral with and projecting radially :from the ring 22.
By this means, when the cover is rotated in one direction the cutter: framewill be rotated also, while, due to the bevel of the inner end of the head 32 in one direction, the cover maybe freely rotatedv in the-other direction.- v
V The sleeve .30 is provided, at its outer end, with a V-shaped recess 36. This recess is adapted to receive a V-shaped member 37 secured on the outer end-of the stem 3'1 of thelatch By pulling this member outward and turning 1t atright angles to its normal position, the latch head will be held-in inj operatlve'posltion, thus permitting free rotation of the coverjin either direction. I The armBO issecured in a rectangular socket'38 maybe imparted to the jcutteriframe Byzmoving the bolt pos1t10n,the-.section 2220f the ring 22 may V vidingan opening through the ring so that" formed integral with an operating handle 39. By means of'this handle rotary: motion in any-desired direction. 7
"23, into inoperative be swung, outward about; its pivotal axis prothe 'main eutter frame and the parts mounted;-thereon maybe fitted about thevpipe to be cut;v When the-pipe'is vwithin the frame the section 22 is moved into closed. positiml the cutter has and locked in this position by the bolt 22.
This provides an entirely closed frame a which effectually eliminates all possibility of the'pipe slipping out of the cutter. hen been adjusted as described, the cutt'er disk ll'is moved inward bymeans of the lever 18 and screw 13 so as to be brought into cutting engagement with the pipe, after which the main cutter frame s rotated by means of the handle 39. During thecutting operation the U-frame 8 serves to hold the cutter disk rigidly in position and to prevent lateral displacement of the a same. This Ll-frame is subjected to tension only and this tension is exerted longitudinally ofthe frame, as a result of whichthis member can be made of relatively light construction. The sleeve 6 is subjected to longitudinal pressure ,only,
construction. By this arrangement of: the bracing and adjusting means for-the cutter I and; can also, :for this reason be made of comparatively l ght disk, .the disk held rigidly in operative is position and there is no danger of the bracmg members becoming broken or distorted due to the fact that thetension and pressure to which they are subjected is exerted upon lines extending longitudinally of the members. Y
There may be slight changes made. in the constructionand arrangement of the different parts of my invention without departing from the field andscope of the same, and, I
intend to include all such variations in this application, as fall within the appended claims, in which a preferred form only of myinventionis disclosed; j I
What I claim, is
1. In a pipe cutter. of the character described, the combination of a main cutter frame,.a U-frame pivotally mounted therein, a rotary cutter carried by the U-frame,
a sleevepivotally connected tothe U-frame and means for adand to the cutter frame, justing the sleeve longitudinally. 1 r
2. In a pipe cutter of the character described, the combination of a main cutter frame,
frame, an internally threaded sleeve pivotally connected at its inner end tothe U- a U-frame pivotally mounted therein,aa rotary cutter carried by the U.-frame,' a stirrup loosely mounted on the cutter frame, and an adjusting ,screwthrea'ded into M sa1d sleeve and havlng itsouter end loosely secured throughthe lstirrup.
. 8. In; a pipe cutterof the character described, thehcombination of a main cutter frame of approximately semi-circular shape open. atone side,. a U.- frame pivotally mounted at its outer end in the cutter frame,
acutter rotatablymounted in the "inner end of the U-i'rame, an internally threaded sleeve inner end of. the U-"frame,ga stirrup rockably mounted on pivotally connected at its'innerend tolythe the cutter frame, anadjusting screw threaded into said sleeve and having frame for operating the same.
4. In pipe cutters, a main cutter frame, a U-frame pivotally mounted therein at its outer end, a cutter carried by the U-frame at the inner end thereof, an outwardly exwtending sleeve pivotally connected at its inner end to the said U-frame, a stirrup pivotally mounted on the cutter frame, said stirrup straddling the outer end of said :sleeve and being in alinement therewith wvhereby all strain will be imparted to said sleeve and stirrup longitudinally of the same during the cutting operation, and means carried by the stirrup and engaging with the sleeve for adjusting said sleeve longitudinally.
5. In pipe cutters, a main cutter frame, a U-frame pivotally mounted therein at its outer end, a rotary cutter carried by the U- frame at the inner end thereof, an internally threaded sleeve pivotally connected at its inner end to the inner end of the U-frame, the axis of the pivotal connection of the sleeve being coincident with the axis of said rotary cutter, a stirrup having the inner ends of its arms pivotally secured to the cutter frame, and an adjusting screw mounted through the top bar of said stirrup for rotation in eitherdirection and secured against longitudinal movement, said screw being threaded into the sleeve soas to adjust the same longitudinally when the screw is rotated.
6. In pipe cutters, a main cutter frame, a Uframe mounted therein at its outer end,
a cutter carried by the U-frame, and means mounted on the cutter frame and connected to the U-frame for adjusting the U-frame in either direction about its pivotal axis, the means for adjusting the U-frame and the U-frame being so relatively disposed that all strain will be transmitted to the U-frame and the adjusting means therefor along lines extending longitudinally of these elements during the cutting operation.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature in presence of two witnesses. 1
