Description

WH'NESSES P. A. MARTEN & J. STANLEY.
GOLF AND OTHER PLAYING BALL.
APPUCATION FILED APR-6,1917.
PATRICK A. MARTIN AND JOHN STANLEY, 0F BIRMINGHAM, ENGLAND.
GOLF AND OTHER PLAYING-BALL.
Application filed April 6, 191?.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, PATRICK ALPHONSUS MARTIN and JOHN STANLEY, subjects of the King of Great Britain, residing at Birmingham, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Golf and other Playing-Balls, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to golf and other playing balls of the kind having a core or center with which is combined a suitable Weighting materal so as to obtain any specific weight according to the size of the ball.
The object of the present invention is to apply the weighting material in such a manner as not to interfere with the resiliency and balance of the core; and according to the said invention it is proposed to attain this object by applying the weighting ma terial to the surface of the core in separate pieces all of equal weight and which are uniformly distributed over-the entire spherical surface.
Figure 1 of the accompanying drawings is a section through a golf ball in accordance with this invention.
Fig. 2 is a view of the core separately, showing the weighting devices.
Fig. 3 shows a modification.
The core a of the ball may be composed of solid rubber or other substance, and applied to the surface thereof are six steel or other metal balls 5 each of which is located and secured within a substantially hemispherical recess 0 in the core, said recesses being disposed two at opposite poles of the core and four at equal distances apart Specification of Letters Patent.

around the equatorial line or great circle to the said poles, so that the whole of the weights are at equal distances apart and uniformly distributed over the entire surface.
The weights may partially project from v the recesses, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and. the ball is completed by the usual tensioned elastic winding d upon the core and the ap- I plication of the ordinary outer cover 6. In-
stead of only six weighting pieces being used, any other suitable number may be employed, same being uniformly distributed over the entire surface. Although spherical weights are preferred since they do not affect the elastic windings and give action to the core of the ball in play, yet it is to be 1 understood that we do not confine ourselves to any particular shape or to any particular material for such weights.
The balls I) may be let into recesses C so as to lie flush with or slightly below the surface of the ball, as in Fig. 3.
Having fully described our invention, what we desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent is A playing ball comprising a core having uniformly spaced recesses v in its surface, weights located in said recesses, ,a tensioned elastic winding upon the core, and an outer cover. 4
In testimony whereof we have hereunto set our hands in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
